Книги, які нам ще слід прочитати…
Книгу «Українські жінки концтабору Равенсбрюк. Голоси в’язнів», яка щойно вийшла з друку, подарувала Бібліотеці і Архіву ім.Т.Шевченка пані Орися Марцюк з Лондона.
30 квітня, виповнилося 79 років від дня визволення нацистського концтабору Равенсбрюк, де загинуло близько 100 тисяч людей. В Німеччині відбулося вшанування пам’яті жертв цього концтабору. Серед присутніх на вшануванні була і Орися Марцюк, мама якої була в’язнем Равенсбрюку.
Такі події і книжки розкривають правду про історію, яку необхідно передавати наступним поколінням. Концтабір Равенсбрюк був одним із найжахливіших елементів нацистської машини знищення. Через нього пройшло понад 130 тисяч жінок і дітей. Жінки помирали від виснаження, голоду та надмірної праці. Непрацездатних розстрілювали або вбивали внутрішньосерцевими ін’єкціями фенолу чи іншими кримінальними псевдомедичними експериментами. Наприкінці 1944 року на території Равенсбрюк німці почали використовувати газові камери, де було вбито від двох до шести тисяч осіб.
У наш час важко переоцінити вплив книг на життя людини. «Книга не лише передає знання та висловлює емоції – вона також є джерелом сили» - сказав шведський письменник Андерс Ріделл. Подарована книга є саме такою.

The book "Ukrainian women of the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Voices of Prisoners", which has just been published, was presented to the T. Shevchenko Library and Archive by Ms. Orysia Martsyuk from London.
April 30 marked the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Ravensbrück, where about 100 thousand people died. Germany commemorated the victims of this concentration camp. Among those present at the commemoration was Orysya Martsyuk, whose mother was a prisoner in Ravensbrück. Such events and books reveal the truth about history, which must be passed on to future generations. The Ravensbrück concentration camp was one of the most horrific elements of the Nazi extermination machine. More than 130 thousand women and children passed through it. Women died from exhaustion, hunger and overwork.
The disabled were shot or killed by intracardiac injections of phenol or other criminal pseudo-medical experiments. At the end of 1944, on the territory of Ravensbrück, the Germans began to use gas chambers, where from two to six thousand people were killed. In our time, it is difficult to overestimate the influence of books on a person's life. "A book not only conveys knowledge and expresses emotions - it is also a source of strength," said the Swedish writer Anders Riedell. The gifted book is exactly that. We express our sincere thanks to Mrs. Orisa Martsyuk for the book, which will enrich our shelves and knowledge.
Prolisok Ukrainian Dance Ensemble, the official dance group of the AUGB London branch, recently hosted a concert to celebrate 10 years since the foundation of the group. This concert was entitled “Step into Ukraine – A Benefit Concert for Ukraine”.
Through Prolisok, the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain were able to showcase the best of Ukrainian culture and share a glimpse of our varied heritage with the British public. The active engagement of AUGB in the concert helped to support our community’s efforts to preserve, promote and share our culture with the world, and raise vital funds to aid the many people impacted by the continuing war in Ukraine.
From the two shows, Prolisok were able to sell over 750 tickets and raise £9,500, which has been donated to Ukrainian humanitarian organisations. This includes London Euromaidan, Ukrainian Children SOS and AUGB, to which Prolisok donated £3000 to the Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal Fund. This donation will enable continued support to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people by providing them with much-needed humanitarian aid.
This illegal war has caused untold suffering for millions of Ukrainians, and it is the duty of all of us to help bring an end to this suffering in whatever way we can. Prolisok’s donation can make a big difference to the lives of many Ukrainians and enable our homeland to prevail against the invaders.
Нещодавно відбувся концерт до 10-річчя заснування Ансамблю українського танцю «Пролісок», що є офіційним танцювальним колективом Лондонського відділу СУБ. Цей концерт мав назву «Step into Ukraine – A Benefit Concert for Ukraine».
Завдяки ансамблю «Пролісок» СУБ зміг продемонструвати найкраще з української культури та поділитися проблиском нашої різноманітної спадщини з британською громадськістю. Активна участь СУБ у концерті допомогла підтримати зусилля нашої громади щодо збереження, популяризації та поширення нашої культури зі світом, а також зібрати життєво важливі кошти для допомоги багатьом людям, які постраждали від триваючої війни в Україні.
За два концерти «Проліску» вдалося продати понад 750 квитків і зібрати 9500 фунтів стерлінгів, які були передані українським гуманітарним організаціям. Це, зокрема, London Euromaidan, Ukrainian Children SOS та СУБ, якому «Пролісок» пожертвував 3000 фунтів стерлінгів до Фонду допомоги Україні. Ця пожертва дозволить і надалі підтримувати Україну та український народ шляхом надання гуманітарної допомоги.
Ця незаконна війна завдала невимовних страждань мільйонам українців, і обов’язком усіх нас є допомогти покласти край цим стражданням усіма можливими способами. Пожертва «Пролісок» може значно змінити життя багатьох українців і дати можливість нашій Батьківщині перемогти загарбників.

We are delighted to be hosting a significant lecture given by Roman Krawec, Chief Editor of the Ukrainians in the United Kingdom Online Encyclopaedia, who has dedicated many years to researching, charting and recording the history of Ukrainians in Great Britain.
This evening's lecture will explore the period 1945-46, providing an overview of some of the key events and people that played a pivotal role in laying the foundations to forming and subsequently developing the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain. Join us to learn more about this highly important period in the history of the Ukrainian community in the UK and the people behind it.

As the conflict in Ukraine enters a critical phase with escalating threats to the Sumy and Kharkiv Oblasts, the resources at the Association Internationale de Coopération Médicale (AICM) are stretched thin. Russian forces continue to advance despite significant losses, putting millions of lives at risk.

The Gt Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) has declared Holodomor as Genocide at a meeting on Friday, 23rd February. The GMCA covers a huge area including Ashton, Bolton, Bury, Trafford, Rochdale, Stockport, Salford and Manchester and the Civic Mayor is Andy Burnham.
It is by bar far the biggest conurbation which has stated that Holodomor was Genocide. The full statement that was voted upon unanimously is quoted below.
2022-23 marked the 90th anniversary of the Ukrainian man-made Famine in 1932-33 known as the Holodomor. In February 2024 we will experience the 2nd anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia and the valiant effort of the Ukrainian people to retain democracy and independence.
The GMCA at the request of the local Ukrainian Community in Greater Manchester wishes to endorse the following statement;
Statement of the AUGB Board of Directors on the second anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine
For the past two years, Ukraine's brave Armed Forces have defended the territorial integrity of their country.
We have witnessed 730 days of destruction of Ukraine, its cities and villages, its infrastructure, killings of civilians, prisoners and wounded, incredible losses and suffering, violence and displacement of millions of people left homeless, separation from family and friends, an educational crisis for children and students, a crisis in mental health, the occupation of parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions... All of this horror has been caused by the Russian Federation when it unleashed its brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022.
At the outset, Ukrainians experienced both fear and shock. Some immediately volunteered for the front line or to assist in other ways, while others experienced the terror of fleeing to the border to escape the terror of war. But Russia failed. Ukraine did not fall, did not surrender, did not lose its statehood or its independence. On the contrary, Ukrainians all over the world remain united and will continue to stand against illegal aggression, as they have done since 2014.
We salute the courage of Ukraine's Armed Forces and the Ukrainian nation. We are also extremely grateful to the United Kingdom, European countries, the United States and all those countries that have provided Ukraine with support and assistance throughout these past two difficult years.
The destruction and damage caused by the Russian Federation, which amounts to hundreds of billions of pounds, is being recorded by analysts at the 'Russia Will Pay' project. This is documenting, verifying, and estimating all material damage caused to Ukraine’s physical infrastructure for Ukraine's post-war recovery, calculating the scale of future reparations. All steps must be taken to use frozen Russian assets to help rebuild Ukraine.
The Russian Federation has committed thousands of war crimes against Ukrainians and we fully support all the efforts being made to establish an International Tribunal to hold Russia to account and bring justice to all who have suffered.
Over the past two years, millions of displaced Ukrainians, have had to reconstruct their lives in other countries. We are confident that they will return to a free Ukraine, where they will make an incredible contribution towards the reconstruction of their homeland into a fully free, democratic, modern, safe and vibrant country.
In the battle for a better tomorrow, Ukraine will prevail! Slava Ukraїni!

Заява Ради Директорів Союзу Українців у Великій Британії (СУБ) у другу річницю війни в Україні
Протягом останніх двох років мужні воїни Збройних Сил України захищають територіальну цілісність своєї держави.
Це 730 днів руйнувань України, її міст і сіл, її інфраструктури, вбивств цивільного населення, полонених і поранених, неймовірних втрат і горя українців, насильства та переселень мільйонів людей, що залишилися без житла, розлуки з близькими та друзями, кризи навчання дітей і студентів, психічного здоров’я населення, окупації окремих районів Донецької та Луганської областей... Все це принесла РФ своїм вторгненням в Україну, 24 лютого 2022 р., розв’язавши жахливу війну.
Українці пережили і страх і шок. Одні стали добровольцями на лінії фронту, чи надавали допомогу іншим способом, а інші стояли на кордоні виїзду. Але Україна не зламалася, не здалася, не втратила свою країну, свою державність і незалежність. Українці в усьому світі залишаються об'єднаними і продовжуватимуть протистояти агресії Росії, як вони це роблять з 2014 року.
Ми віддаємо належне хоробрості Збройних Сил України і українського народу. Водночас ми надзвичайно вдячні Великій Британії, країнам Європи, США та всім тим країнам, які надали Україні підтримку та допомогу протягом цих двох важких років.
Здійснені РФ руйнування та збитки на сотні мільярдів фунтів стерлінгів фіксуються експертами проекту «Росія заплатить», що є надзвичайно важливим для післявоєнного відновлення України та підрахунку масштабів майбутніх репарацій. Необхідно докласти всіх зусиль щоб заморожені російські активи були використані для відбудови України.
Російська Федерація скоїла тисячі військових злочинів проти українців. Ми всебічно підтримуємо всі зусилля, спрямовані на створення Міжнародного Трибуналу для притягнення Росії до відповідальності та відновлення справедливості для всіх, що постраждали від її агресії.
За останні два роки мільйони українських переселенців були змушені відновлювати своє життя в інших країнах. Ми впевнені, що вони повернуться назад у вільну Україну, де зроблять надзвичайний внесок у відбудову своєї Батьківщини як демократичної, сучасної, безпечної й процвітаючої країни з високим рівнем благоустрою.
У битві за справедливе завтра Україна переможе!

‘Dance for Ukraine’ at the London Palladium
A spectacular evening of ballet dedicated to Ukraine was held at the London Palladium in London on Sunday (18 February). This iconic theatre dates back to the early 20th century and has seen thousands of famous artists perform on its stage.
The charity gala concert featured international stars - artists from the Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, the Ljubljana Slovene National Theatre Opera and Ballet, the Asami Maki Tokyo Ballet, the Royal Swedish Ballet, National Ballets of Ukraine, Slovakia, Latvian National Ballet, the Dutch National Ballet, the Vienna National Ballet and others. The programme also included a performance given by the Royal Opera House Songs for Ukraine Chorus, conducted by Keri-Lynn Wilson, which movingly opened the concert with the Ukrainian National Anthem and the Prayer for Ukraine.
The ballet performances were captivating as they showcased the beauty of the human body and the art of movement which didn't require any human language or translation. The stunning display enraptured the audience and the evening ended with a standing ovation and cries of "bravo!" in appreciation of the performers' skill and talent. The concert was a resounding success and the artistry on display was a testament to the beauty and power of expression without words.
The producer and artistic director of the event was Ivan Putrov, who was enthusiastically applauded by the audience. Born in Kyiv and a star of the Royal Ballet, he has been awarded prestigious prizes in Lausanne, a gold medal at the Serge Lifar International Ballet Competition, a gold medal at the Vaslav Nijinsky Festival, etc., produced 'People in Motion' at the Saddler's Wells Theatre in London, and more. He has collaborated on various creative projects with renowned contemporary artists, including Mario Testino, Nick Knight, Sam Taylor-Wood, Pet Shop Boys and others. In his brief speech, he called for increased understanding and support for young talented Ukrainian artists who, as a result of Russia's war against Ukraine, are unable to complete their education.
The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain would like to express its sincerest gratitude to Ivan Putrov for organizing such a high-profile concert dedicated to Ukraine, and congratulate him on the resounding success of this event. It was a true testament to Ivan’s unwavering commitment to promoting Ukraine and its rich cultural heritage.
«Танець за Україну» в лондонському Палладіумі
Блискучий вечір балету, присвячений Україні, відбувся в неділю, 18 лютого, у лондонському Палладіумі - театрі заснованому на початку 20 століття, на сцені якого виступали тисячі знаменитих артистів.
У благодійному гала-концерті виступали міжнародні зірки – артисти Королівського балету, Англійського національного балету, балету Паризької опери, опери та балету Любляни, Токіо та Швеції, Національних балетів - України, Словаччини, Латвії, Нідерландів, Віденського національного балету інші.
Програма почалась виступом хору Royal Opera House «Пісні для України» під диригуванням Кері-Лінн Вілсон. Національний гімн України змусив підвести публіку лондонського Палладіуму. Це був дуже зворушливий момент. Прозвучала також і Молитва за Україну.
Виступи артистів балету, в яких краса тіла й мистецтво руху не вимагали ні людської мови ні перекладу, зачаровували та не залишили байдужими нікого. Цей зірковий вечір був надзвичайно чудово прийнятий публікою, яка cвоїми бурхливими оваціями та криками «браво!» нагороджувала артистів.
Продюсером та артистичним директором цього заходу був Іван Путров, якого зал вітав щедрими оплесками. Киянин, зірка Королівського балету, нагороджений престижними преміями у Лозанні, золотою медаллю на Міжнародному конкурсі артистів балету ім. Сержа Лифаря, золотою медаллю на фестивалі Вацлава Ніжинського тощо, продюсер «Люди в русі» в лондонському театрі Saddler's Wells та інше. Він співпрацював над різними творчими проектами з відомими митцями сучасності, серед яких Mario Testino, Nick Knight, Sam Taylor-Wood, Pet Shop Boys та інші. У своєму короткому слові він закликав до розуміння та підтримки молодих талантів, які в результаті війни Росії проти України не мають можливості продовжувати своє навчання.
Союз Українців у Великій Британії дякує Івану Путрову за організацію такого масштабного і престижного заходу, присвяченого Україні і сердечно вітає з успіхом! Це було справжнім свідченням його непохитної відданості популяризації України та її багатої культури.
On 19 February 2024, the Home Office announced a new visa extension scheme, the Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) scheme. This will ensure those affected can apply to stay in the UK for an additional 18 months and continue to have the same rights to access work, benefits, healthcare, and education throughout their stay.
Applications will be open online from early 2025, and those who arrived via one of the three Ukraine schemes are eligible. Those who were granted Leave Outside of the Rules because of requiring sanctuary in the UK from Ukraine will also be eligible. Individuals will be able to make their applications within the last three months of an existing visa.
This new scheme is consistent with the UK Government’s strong belief that Ukraine will be safe again and the hope of the Government of Ukraine that their citizens will eventually be able to return to help rebuild the country when it is safe.
In addition, on 19 February 2024, the Home Office announced some changes to the three existing Ukraine visa schemes. These are outlined below and came into effect on 19 February 2024:
Changes to Homes for Ukraine:
All new visa applications submitted under the Homes for Ukraine Scheme from 15:00 on the 19th of February, if granted, will now qualify for 18 months of permission to stay in the UK, with eligibility to apply for the UPE once their visas expire.
There will also be a requirement that new Homes for Ukraine sponsors are either British or Irish citizens or have settled status (which means having the right to live in the UK permanently). This change will help assure that UK-based sponsors are able to provide stable and long-term accommodation for Ukrainian guests, with established ties into communities to help their guests assimilate and thrive independently.
Funding:
Please note that the Government will continue to provide funding to councils via the Local Authority Tariff payment at a rate of £5,900 for guests who arrived in the UK after 1 January on the Homes for Ukraine scheme. This funding will provide support to families to rebuild their lives and fully integrate into communities. This funding will be available for arrivals on the new Homes for Ukraine visa, which comes into effect on 19 February 2024, with 18 months leave to remain.
Thank you payments are available to sponsors for the duration of a guest’s Homes for Ukraine visa permission - up to 36 months for sponsors of guests on a three year Homes for Ukraine visa, and up to 18 months for guests on the new 18 month Homes for Ukraine visa (which came into effect on 19 February 2024).
Closure of schemes:
The Government’s priority is to continue to provide a safe and secure haven for those fleeing the ongoing conflict.
The Ukraine Family scheme will now be closed to new applicants in favour of a single visa application route (Homes for Ukraine) for Ukrainians to come to the UK. This will streamline visa routes and provide greater clarity for applicants. Simplifying the schemes in this way will ensure consistency in accommodation and safeguarding checks.
Anyone who has applied for (and granted) a Homes for Ukraine visa by 14:59 on 19 February 2024, regardless of whether they arrive/are granted their visa afterward, will receive 36 months leave to remain. Applications received and granted from 15:00 on 19 February 2024 will have the new rules applied to them and receive 18 months of leave to remain.
The Ukraine Extension scheme will also be closed. Applications for this route will be accepted until 16 May 2024, with eligibility limited to Ukrainian nationals who hold permission to enter or stay in the UK on or before 16 November 2023.
ГОЛОВНІ НОВИНИ - ЗМІНИ В УКРАЇНСЬКІЙ ВІЗОВІЙ СХЕМІ ТА ЗАВЕРШЕННЯ UKRAINE FAMILY SCHEME VISA
19 лютого 2024 року Міністерство внутрішніх справ оголосило про нову схему продовження візи – схему продовження дозволу в Україні (UPE). Це забезпечить українцям, що перебувають зараз у Великій Британії, можливість подати заявку на продовження перебування ще на 18 місяців та дозволить їм мати ті ж самі права на доступ до роботи, пільг, медичної допомоги та освіти протягом усього періоду перебування.

Ті, кому було надано дозвіл на Leave Outside через потребу в притулку у Великій Британії з України, також матимуть право. Особи зможуть подавати заявки протягом останніх трьох місяців з моменту дії існуючої візи.
В той же час уряд Великій Британії має тверду віру в те, що Україна знову буде в безпеці, і сподівається, що уряд України та українські громадяни врешті-решт зможуть повернутися, щоб допомогти відновити країну, коли це буде безпечно.
Крім того, 19 лютого 2024 року Міністерство внутрішніх справ оголосило про деякі зміни до трьох існуючих візових схем для України. Вони наведені нижче та набули чинності 19 лютого 2024 року:
Зміни до схеми Homes for Ukraine:
Усі нові візові заявки, подані за схемою Homes for Ukraine після 15:00 19 лютого, якщо їх буде надано, тепер кваліфікуватимуться для 18-місячного дозволу на перебування у Великій Британії з правом подати заяву на UPE після закінчення терміну дії візи.
Іншою вимогою є те, що нові спонсори схеми Homes for Ukraine мають бути громадянами Великобританії чи Ірландії або мати статус осілості (що означає право постійного проживання у Великій Британії). Ця зміна допоможе гарантувати, що британські спонсори зможуть забезпечити стабільне та довгострокове житло для українських гостей, маючи встановлені зв’язки в громадах, щоб допомогти своїм гостям асимілюватися та розвиватися незалежно.

Будь ласка, зверніть увагу, що Уряд продовжуватиме надавати фінансування радам через тарифні виплати місцевих органів влади у розмірі £5900 для гостей, які прибули до Великій Британї після 1 січня за схемою Homes for Ukraine. Це фінансування надасть підтримку сім’ям, для відновлення їх життя та інтегрування в громади. Це фінансування буде доступним для прибуття за новою візою Homes for Ukraine, яка набуває чинності 19 лютого 2024 року, із можливістю продовження на 18 місяців.
Платежі подяки доступні для спонсорів протягом терміну дії дозволу гостя на візу Homes for Ukraine - до 36 місяців для спонсорів гостей за трирічною візою Homes for Ukraine та до 18 місяців для гостей за новою 18-місячною візою Homes for Віза України (що набула чинності 19 лютого 2024 року).

Пріоритетом уряду є продовження надання безпечного та надійного притулку для тих, хто потерпає від триваючого конфлікту.
Схема Ukraine Family тепер буде закрита для нових заявників на користь єдиного способу подачі віз (Homes for Ukraine) для українців, які приїжджають до Великій Британії. Це спростить візові способи та забезпечить більшу ясність для заявників. Спрощення схем таким чином забезпечить узгодженість перевірок розміщення та захисту.
Будь-хто, хто подав (і отримав) візу Homes for Ukraine до 14:59 19 лютого 2024 року, незалежно від того, чи вони прибули/отримали візу пізніше, отримають 36-місячне продовження на перебування. Заявки, отримані та надані після 15:00 19 лютого 2024 року, застосовуватимуться за новими правилами та отримають 18-місячне продовження на перебування.
Також буде закрито схему Ukraine Extension. Заявки по цій схемі прийматимуться до 16 травня 2024 року, причому право на участь обмежується громадянами України, які мають дозвіл на в’їзд або перебування у Великій Британії до 16 листопада 2023 року.

У четверту суботу листопада, коли у світі вшановують пам’ять жертв Голодомору в Україні, у Бібліотеці і Архіві ім.Т. Шевченка в Лондоні відбувся урок пам’яті для двох 9-х класів лондонської Школи українознавства.
На початку уроку д-р Л.Пекарська, куратор Бібліотеки, коротко ознайомила учнів із трагічною сторінкою в історії українського народу 1932 – 1933 років: розповіла про причини Голодомору, насильницьку колективізацію й викачування зерна для індустріалізації країни. Незалежних селян, зберігачів національного духу України (традицій, фольклору, музики, мови ін.) загоняли в колгоспи, розкуркулювали, депортовували тощо. Українські села були охоплені спротивом, селяни не хотіли віддавати вирощене, піднимали повстання і влада карала їх голодом. Наслідки для українського суспільства були жахливі – мільйони загиблих. Після Голодомору в українських селах вже не було кому піднімати повстання.
Куратор представила добірку книг з колекції Бібліотеки доречних до теми та зачитала окремі уривки зі спогадів одного зі свідків тих подій – Данила Федоряченка (с. Трипілля, Київщина), який у той час був молодший за цих учнів. У залі була повна тиша, діти уважно слухали…
Про штучно створений жахливий голод в Україні тепер можна дізнатися з книжок і документальних фільмів. Найціннішими є спогади людей, які ще пам'ятали цю трагедію. А таких щороку ставало все менше. Тому СУБ зібрав свідчення у свідків Голодомору, які чудом вижили, а після лихоліття Другої світової війни опинилися у Британії та створив документальний фільм, висвітлений під час уроку – Ukraine 1932-33. Holodomor Survivors (2018). Учні уважно дивилися і слухали ці глибоко емоційні, особисті свідчення страшної правди про голод 1932-33, які залишаються цінним історичним джерелом. Їхні спогади переконливіші за статистичні дані, бо люди говорили про свої долі і життя своїх близьких.
Після фільму учителі запропонували учням поділитися родинними історіями щодо теми Голодомору, якщо вони знають такі. Деякі з дітей виступили й розповіли про драматичний досвід своїх бабусь або дідусів, згадуючи те, що почули від них. Одна з учениць емоційно прочитала вірш.
О 4-тій годині за київським часом була запалена Свічка пам’яті і всі присутні хвилиною мовчання вшанували пам’ять мільйонів українців, заморених голодом тоталітарним сталінським режимом у 1932- 1933 роках.
На завершення Л.Пекарська додала, що голод був один з компонентів великої атаки на українське селянство, керівні кадри, інтелігенцію й культуру. Цю тему замовчували в СРСР протягом десятиліть. На заході одними з перших про Голодомор заявили два британські журналісти Ґарет Джонс у «Times» і Малколм Маґґерідж у «Guardian». Вони ризикували, пересуваючись по території УССР потайки, щоб побачити все своїми очима й розповідали про охоплену страшним голодом Україну...
Statement of the AUGB Board of Directors on the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor in Ukraine 1932 – 1933
This week, the international community has been joining Ukraine and Ukrainian communities across the globe to mark the 90th anniversary of the 1932-33 Holodomor in which millions of Ukrainians and their children were starved to death in a deliberate and barbaric act of genocide.
We remember all of the victims – those who died, those who miraculously survived and those who were never born as populations of village after village were systematically annihilated through forced famine. Stalin and the Kremlin were determined to destroy Ukrainian aspirations for independence by weaponizing food.
All Ukrainian farms became state property and all grain was transported out of Ukraine. Impossible grain quotas were set and brigades were sent to search and confiscate or destroy all foodstuffs. Anyone caught with grain was shot or sentenced to hard labour in exile, which in itself meant almost certain death.
The Kremlin wilfully and brutally committed mass murder on an unimaginable scale. During the Holodomor, a quarter of those who starved were children. Russia continues to deny the genocide that it committed in 1932-33 and refuses to open up its archives on the Holodomor for scrutiny.
It is impossible not to draw comparisons between the events that took place 90 years ago and those taking place today. In February 2022 Russia unleashed an illegal war on Ukraine, indiscriminately killing and injuring thousands and displacing millions of people.
Like Stalin, Putin has and continues to ruthlessly use food as one of his weapons of war against Ukraine – stealing or destroying its grain, and also preventing its export to regions of the world that are in desperate need of it. This is, of course, in addition to mercilessly terrorising and destroying Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and committing brutal war crimes, senseless murder and deportations against children and the civilian population.
As in 1932-33, Russia is again trying to wipe the Ukrainian nation off the face of the earth. For this reason alone, the free world must continue to stand with Ukraine to protect the values that we all cherish and to safeguard the future freedom and security of our continent. We must never consider letting the tyrant to win.

We invite you to our exclusive exposition event dedicated to remembering the Holodomor: Uncondemned Genocide Of Ukrainians. For the first time, our event partner, the National Museum of Holodomor-Genocide from Kyiv, Ukraine, brings their exposition to London.
The Holodomor, also known as the Great Ukrainian Famine, was a man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine from 1932 to 1933 that claimed the lives of millions of Ukrainians. The Holodomor has been officially recognized as a genocide of Ukrainians by the USSR regime in over 35 nations, including the United Kingdom, which made this recognition official in May 2023.
The National Museum of Holodomor-Genocide is a state museum preserving the memory of Holodomor victims and highlighting the history of the genocide of the Ukrainian nation in 1932-1933. The museum is the centre of commemoration for the millions of Ukrainians killed during the Holodomor. We are grateful for the opportunity to present materials generously provided by the museum for our exposition, including videos and print. All material will be provided in two languages Ukrainian and English.
A joint statement to the United Nations signed by 25 countries in 2003 declared that 7–10 million Ukrainians died during the Holodomor. It is our duty to those who perished during the Holodomor and to the Ukrainian nation as a whole to continue educating the world about the suffering caused by the atrocities of the Soviet regime and the Red Army.
We believe that only by understanding our history can we comprehend the present. With that in mind, one can hopefully draw parallels between the actions and attitudes displayed by the Soviets towards Ukrainians in the 1930s and what is happening in Ukraine today.
The exposition will be held at the London Branch of Association Of The Ukrainians In Great Britain and curated by AUGB London team.

14:00 – 15:30 and 15:30 – 17:00
Each 1.5-hour session will include:

• Video about the Holodomor.

Голодомор був штучно спричинений як механізм геноциду та репресій українців в Радянській Україні в 1932–1933 роках. Голодомор забрав життя мільйонів українців та був офіційно визнаний геноцидом українців режимом СРСР у понад 35 країнах, у тому числі у Великій Британії, яка офіційно визнала це у травні 2023 року.
Національний Музей Голодомору-Геноциду в Києві є державним музеєм, який зберігає пам'ять про жертв Голодомору та висвітлює історію геноциду українського народу 1932-1933 років. Музей є центром вшанування пам’яті мільйонів українців, убитих під час Голодомору. Ми вдячні за можливість представити щедро надані музеєм матеріали для нашої експозиції, зокрема відео та друковані матеріали. Усі матеріали будуть надані двома мовами українською та англійською.
У спільній заяві до ООН, підписаній 25 країнами у 2003 році, було зазначено, що під час Голодомору загинуло 7–10 мільйонів українців. Наш обов’язок перед тими, хто загинув під час Голодомору, і перед українським народом загалом – продовжувати інформувати світ про страждання, спричинені звірствами радянського режиму та Червоної армії.
Ми віримо, що лише розуміючи свою історію, можна осягнути сьогодення.
Ми сподіваємось що ця виставка допоможе провести паралелі між діями та ставленням радянської влади до українців у 1930-х роках і тим, що відбувається в Україні сьогодні.
Експозиція проходитиме у Лондонському Українському Культурному Центрі та куруватиметься командою СУБ Лондоні.

James Bartholomew, former Daily Telegraph lead-writer, talks about his plans to raise awareness about the 1932-33 Holodomor.
His book, The Welfare State We’re In, was described as “splendid” by the Nobel Prize-winner, Milton Friedman. In 2017, he founded the Museum of Communist Terror and three years later, he created the Foundation for the History of Totalitarianism.

We created the NEZLAMNA project to chronicle the lives of these ordinary women in extraordinary circumstances. The project is dedicated to all of Ukraine’s nezlamna women, whether they reached safety abroad, stayed at home, or left for the front line to defend their country, people, and way of life.

This year is the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor and the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain is spearheading a campaign to commemorate its victims.
The Day of Sorrow on Saturday 25 November is an anniversary that can never be forgotten and we must mark it in a way which both honours the innocent victims of the Holodomor and draws the parallel with Russia’s war against Ukraine today.
Over the past few years, Branches of the AUGB and the Association of Ukrainian Women have jointly collaborated in a Campaign of HOPE (Help Other People Eat) in memory of the victims of the Holodomor.
This has entailed collecting foodstuffs and delivering them to a local food bank and raising funds to help those less fortunate in Ukraine who have little to eat. We propose to repeat the Campaign again this year.

Протягом останніх кількох років Відділи СУБ та Організація Українських Жінок (ОУЖ) спільно брали участь у Акції НАДІЇ (Help Other People Eat) в пам'ять про жертв Голодомору.

One of them will be happening in Bradford, on Saturday, 4 November 2023, from 5pm, at the Ukrainian Community Centre.
The fire will be lit just after 5pm with fireworks scheduled for around 7.15pm, with sparklers available for children.
Bonfire night favourites such as pie and peas will be available to purchase throughout the event and the bar will be open for drinks to compliment the food.
This is not a ticketed event and entrance is free, but donations to #SupportUkraine are welcome. Collection buckets will be located around the venue for anyone wishing to make a financial donation in support of Ukraine.

Під час заходу можна буде придбати страви, які є популярні під час цієї ночі багаття, а саме, пиріг і горох, і, звичайно бар буде відкритий для напоїв на додаток до їжі.
На цей захід не потрібні квитки, вхід безкоштовний, але вітатимуться пожертви на #SupportUkraine. В центрі будуть розміщені скриньки для пожертв для всіх, хто бажає зробити фінансовий внесок на підтримку України.
This is for young people from Ukraine aged 10-17 who are living in the UK. Our Youth Space is a safe place to have fun and informally practice English language speaking and listening skills, whilst also meeting new friends. Each session we will play games, chat, and complete fun activities. We will have Ukrainian speakers available in the sessions to help the young people express themselves if needed, alongside other staff from the Ukrainian Support Helpline. The sessions are held online so a microphone and camera will be required.

Організовано відділом CУБ у Малверні 01.10.2023 року чудове свято до дня Захисника та захисниць України також Козацтва та Покрови. Ми щиро раді що у цей прекрасний день трьох свят ми об'єднали багато українських родин, щоб подякувати нашим захисникам та підтримати їх. Також було організовано збір коштів для наших захисників та захисниць усі зібрані кошти передані в Україну для закупівлі кровоспинних засобів. Також ми працюємо над проектом відкриття української суботньої школи у Малверні. Наша громада у Малверні ще зовсім молода, але ми віримо що кожен хто докладає свої можливості та зусилля до розвитку цієї спільноти отримує неймовірну, потужну українську енергію єдності, адже ми робимо це для нашого майбутнього - наших дітей.
Organized by the AUGB department in Malvern on October 1st, 2023, a wonderful holiday - the Day of the Defenders of Ukraine, as well as Cossacks and Protection. We are sincerely glad that on this beautiful day of three holidays, we united many Ukrainian families to thank our defenders and support them. A collection of funds was also organized for our defenders, which all were transferred to Ukraine for the purchase of hemostatic agents.We are also working on a project to open a Ukrainian Saturday school in Malvern.Our community in Malvern is still quite young, but we believe that everyone who devotes their abilities and efforts to the development of this community receives an incredible, powerful Ukrainian energy of unity, because we do it for our future - our children.
Overseas teachers enrich the lives of students and add value to schools and the wider community. The Department for Education (DfE) wants to help Ukrainian refugees in any way we can, and we support and encourage schools and training providers to recruit Ukrainian teachers and teacher trainees.
We can help if you’re interested in teaching children aged 5 to 18. If you’d like to teach other age groups, try teaching in a university or teaching in further education.

6 жовтня 2023 р. після тяжкої тривалої хвороби пішла із життя д-р Ярослава Йосипишин, директор української Бібліотеки імені Симона Петлюри в Парижі, якою опікувалася і зберігала її фонди, головний редактор «Бюлетеня Української Бібліотеки імени Симона Петлюри», член НТШЄ, проф. УВУ в Мюнхені, учасник багатьох міжнародних конференцій.

On October 6, 2023, Dr. Yaroslava Yosypyshyn, the dedicated director of the Ukrainian Library named after Simon Petliura in Paris, passed away after a prolonged and serious illness. She was known for her exceptional care and preservation of the library's collections, as well as her role as the editor-in-chief of the 'Bulletin of the Ukrainian Library named after Simon Petliura.' Dr. Yosypyshyn was also a distinguished member of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Europe, a professor in Munich, and an active participant in numerous international conferences.
Her contributions and unwavering commitment to her work will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. May her memory be eternal.

У 1998-2002 рр. - Надзвичайний і Повноважний Посол у Великій Британії, відстоював державні інтереси, був людиною високої культури та моралі, освіченої у багатьох сферах знань. Таким його будуть пам’ятати всі, хто його знав.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Volodymyr Vasylenko on 9 October, 2023.
Dr. Vasylenko was a distinguished legal scholar, a highly accomplished diplomat, an honoured lawyer of Ukraine, an international jurist and a respected professor. He will be remembered for his exceptional service, including his role as a co-author of the Declaration on State Sovereignty of Ukraine and his representation of Ukraine at the UN Human Rights Commission and Council in 1990. From 1998 to 2002, he served as Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UK.
Dr. Vasylenko was truly a man of great culture and unwavering morality, who had a profound understanding of various fields of knowledge. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) extends its deepest condolences to Dr. Vasylenko's family, the Embassy of Ukraine, his colleagues and friends. May his memory be eternal.

It all takes place at ACC Liverpool. Arrival is from 8.45am and it’s a full-day event, which is set to finish at 4.30pm. And just like the majority of our Eurovision host city activities, it’s totally free.

We are happy to present you a new illuminating exhibition of black and white photographs of the port city of Odesa ‘Memories of Odesa’, is an ode to this grand metropolis and its people. Awarded UNESCO Heritage status in 2023, Odesa remains an ‘Heroic city” despite sustained Russian bombardment during the summer of this year. This action has resulted in significant damage to historic buildings such as the city’s main Orthodox Cathedral, several museums and grand apartment buildings, not to mention tragic loss of life.
British photographer Nicholas Hopkins visited Ukraine in the spring of 2003 with thirty rolls of Agfa and Kodak monochrome and colour film, his Leica camera, and a desire to capture the daily life and environs of the ‘Hero City’ (an honour awarded to Odesa in 1945). In the spring of 2003 Odesa was in a state of flux after a long and bitter winter. Repairs were being undertaken to roads and infrastructure; Odesa was readying itself for the arrival of spring.
One third of all sales made will be donated to the independent Ukrainian charity Sunrise Ukraine which collects and distributes essentials such as medicine, food, baby food, clothes, and hygiene products.
Established shortly after the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces in 2022, the charity continues to support hospitals, emergency services and communities in need.
Iryna Voievodina, stepdaughter of Nicholas Hopkins’ friend and guide in Ukraine, Stephen Ennis, works closely in assisting Sunrise Ukraine. Iryna lives between Odesa, where she is a practicing lawyer, and the UK, where her children currently live with Stephen and her mother, Olga.

Ukrainian artist and a British medieval historian duo are collaborating on a project supported by the UCL Trellis Public Art programme. They will be recreating historic and folk rituals that helped people cope with change - from summer to autumn, from want to plenty, and from life to death.
Please join them at the Victoria Park Outdoor classroom during the All Souls season for an exchange of stories about wandering spirits and magical creatures in medieval times in the UK and Ukraine. Your contributions will inform the final artwork to be exhibited in March in East London.
We welcome the local Ukrainian community, especially those who recently arrived on the Homes for Ukraine scheme to attend the event, but also everybody who may be interested in volunteering at the Cordwainers Grow garden in Victoria Park.
This second seasonal workshop will bring these hands-on activities:
- Performance of a folk ritual artist Maria Magdalena and didukh making workshop
- Wish doll making
- Candle wax moulding
- Story exchanges activated by painted stones led by Sophie
- Participatory performances with Olha: imaginary exercises involving tea, food and painting
Collaborators:
Olha Pryymak is a Ukrainian-British artist working across painting and performance who will be holding drop-in tea sessions for the duration of the workshop.
Sophie Page is a historian of medieval magic, cosmology and living things (animals and plants). She has research interests and expertise in ritual, cosmological worldviews, folk traditions, magical objects, animals and literary narratives.
Cordwainers Grow is a local social enterprise set up in 2014 that aims to increase the quality of biodiversity in the local area and support the urban and peri-urban food growing movement to develop a more resilient food system. CG currently manages the Outdoor Classroom garden supported by Victoria Park, the Parks Management & Engagement team, and Tower Hamlets.

The Kyiv City Ballet (KCB) were stranded in Paris when the Russian aggression began. Every member of the ballet company has been dispossessed of their homes and family, with many losing loved ones in the conflict. Despite this, the company has choreographed a production, A Tribute To Peace, as an accolade to their homeland and to remind the world of the overwhelming Ukrainian wish for peace.
The production has just concluded a successful month-long run at the Edinburgh Festival and before that was extremely well received at the York Theatre Royal, the Bath Theatre Royal and the Mermaid Theatre Southampton. Profits from the tour’s ticket sales will be directed towards the charitable and humanitarian outreach of the Kyiv City Ballet back home in Ukraine.
The KCB will be performing A Tribute To Peace at the Sadler’s Wells Peacock Theatre from 26th September to 30th September.

Returning for its third year, the Reboot Festival will take place at Barons Court Theatre between 5 - 23 September. As always, Reboot will consist of three different lineups of new short plays, with a different lineup each week.
The 17 scripts have been selected out of over 400 submissions from places as diverse as France, Nigeria, New Zealand, Japan, Mexico, India, Canada, Romania, the US and across the UK. With a wide selection of topics and issues being covered within this selection, there’s something for everyone to enjoy across the festival.
The Chronicles by Anna Halas will be part of the festival this week. It's the story of a mother who flees the War in Ukraine, and her reflections on the horrors she witnessed. Anna Halas, the playwright, is a Ukrainian, known for both her plays and her translations of other Ukrainian works.
General admission tickets start at £15, with concessions tickets at £10. Free tickets are offered for Ukrainian passport holders and NHS workers.

The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain is pleased to announce the winners of the 4th AUGB Holodomor Essay Prize Competition 2023 as follows:
1st prize: David Ruston, Wilmington Grammar School for Boys, Dartford
2nd prize: Diya Kotecha, Loughborough High, Loughborough
3rd prize: Cameron McClure, Dunottar School, Reigate
Highly Commended: Teddy Childs, Northampton School for Boys, Northampton
Highly Commended: Alexander Carter, Stockport Grammar School, Stockport
The fourth and most successful competition to date, the essays were of a very high standard this year. The Lead Judge Professor Olga Onuch, Professor of Comparative and Ukrainian Politics at the University of Manchester said of the winning essay, which focused on the French Statesman Edouard Herriot and his denial of the Holodomor after touring Kharkiv in 1933 "This is an outstanding essay and benefits from truly excellent writing. Overall, the essay and its main ideas are very well argued, organized, and researched. It was a pleasure to read it."
Winner David Ruston, of Wilmington Grammar School, who is now set to study History at Selwyn College, Cambridge University said “I very much enjoyed the process of research and attempting to put to paper what I wanted to say about such a momentous event in less than 2000 words… I will be studying History…so just the penning of this essay was useful to me as a way of improving my historical skills and I am very glad for it.”
Dr Luke Harris, David’s teacher said “David is one of the finest historians we've had the opportunity to teach here at Wilmington Grammar School for Boys, this is further evidence of this. We're very proud that he's going to Cambridge to read history. Thank you for organising the competition and for the fantastic prize.”
Second prize winner Diya Kotecha, of Loughborough High, focused on the impact of Holodomor on Ukrainian women and children in particular. Professor Onuch commented “The essay does a very good job of identifying the different impacts of the Holodomor on Ukraine and Ukrainians’ lives - focusing in on the direct impacts of the policies and famine on social and economic peasant life, women’s lives specifically, psychological trauma in the population, and culture and identity in Ukraine.…the substance and ideas presented are very rich.”
Third Prize winner Cameron McClure, who attends Dunottar School in Reigate, took an interesting approach in assessing how accurately the film ‘Mr Jones’ represented the key aspects of the Holodomor. Professor Onuch said “It was an excellent idea to compare primary documentation and evidence with the information presented in the film [Mr Jones]…. a particularly good job at this exact thing in the case of instances of cannibalism.”
AUGB would like to thank Professor Onuch for giving up her time to participate in this important project as the Lead Judge. The Essay Prize Competition, now running for the fourth time, is open to Sixth Form students (Years 12/13) attending any school or college in the UK and studying any subject. Candidates were invited to submit an essay, of between 1500 and 2000 words. The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB), in partnership with the Nadia Diuk Memorial Programme, offers a prize worth up to £1000, split between the candidate and their school, for the best essay on the topic of the 1932 – 1933 Holodomor, the Ukrainian famine in which an estimated seven million Ukrainians died over a period of 18 months.

Homes for Ukraine visa holders when they move to rented accommodation, are eligible for a 50% discount on council tax as they are disregarded persons.

Join us for Prof. Luciuk's presentation and a discussion on "Enemy Archives: Soviet Counterinsurgency Operations and the Ukrainian Nationalist Movement – Selections from the Secret Police Archives" on 12th of October, 2023.
The documents seized from the insurgents and Soviet analyses of them shed light on a wide range of experiences in the underground: how the movement struggled to maintain discipline and morale, how it dealt with suspected informers, and how it resisted the ruthless Soviet state, laying the foundations for the continuing Ukrainian struggle against foreign domination.

Shevchenko Library and Archive of AUGB invite everyone to the movie and lecture. "Secrets of great Ukrainians. Symon Petliura" directed by Akim Galimov, is about the the sensational investigation of the murder of Symon Petliura in Paris in 1926.
After the screening, a meeting with Stefan Dunikovsky, a participant in the film, a French lawyer, who searched for a lot of documents in the Parisian archives, which became the impetus for the creation of the film.

Dr. James Jarrett, Artistic Director of the Blackwater Theatre Company is looking for Ukrainians with a story to tell – a story of resilience, courage, and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
Our upcoming theatre endeavour, titled "Blood. Fear. Courage: A Ukrainian Theatre Project," seeks to illuminate the incredible stories of those who experienced the invasion of Ukraine. We're eager to connect with Ukrainian individuals who are willing to share their personal narratives, contributing to an emotionally impactful and thought-provoking theatrical production.
The play will be performed at The Mercury Theatre, Colchester on the 19th, 21st, and 22nd of October 2023, as part of the Colchester Fringe Theatre Festival. This will be an historic event that will live long in the memory of the people of Colchester, and will be documented for future generations.
The play will be performed by professional actors, but the script itself will be taken directly from the words of the Ukrainian people, who lived through the invasion of their country by Russia. All names will be changed to protect the privacy and anonymity of the participants if they wish.
All testimonies are valuable, but we are certainly interested in hearing from those who travelled across the country to Poland before coming to the UK, and from those who were conscripted to fight to defend their country.
The longer-term plan is to develop the project into a series of performances, workshops, and employment opportunities for the benefit of the Ukrainian community in the UK, and, in particular, to provide opportunities for young Ukrainian people who wish to work in the theatre.

Our very best wishes go out to everyone on Ukraine’s Independence Day.
This day, 24 August, is particularly poignant to every Ukrainian, irrespective of faith, location or language. It is a day that reminds us all of generations of our ancestors who formed our nation and sacrificed their lives for a free and independent Ukraine. And though today marks only the 32nd anniversary of independence, our historical and cultural national identity stems back centuries to the times of ancient Kyivan-Rus’. This is a very proud history which Russia has plundered and distorted over centuries, killing millions of Ukrainians to try and wipe the Ukrainian nation off the face of the earth.
Before the eyes of the world, Ukraine is demonstrating its commitment to independence - rejecting Russia’s control, barbarism, tyranny and influence. In turn, the free world has very decisively responded to Russia’s all-out war by providing incredible support to Ukraine and Ukrainians. This is particularly true of the United Kingdom which has been instrumental in not only increasing the supply of military aid and equipment for the restoration of Ukraine’s sovereign territory, but also in providing a safe haven to tens of thousands of Ukrainians fleeing the war.
The future peace, freedom and independence of Europe continues to be fought for today on Ukrainian soil. Since 2014 alone, Russia has savagely perpetrated countless war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine. Thousands of innocent civilians have been killed, including children; thousands have suffered the barbarism of torture and rape, thousands of Ukrainian children have been kidnapped and taken to Russia, and thousands of children have been left orphaned.
A ruthless criminal terrorist state must not be allowed to walk away from its heinous crimes unpunished. We stand with the Ukrainian people in rejecting any outcome that does not return every inch of Ukrainian land, including Crimea, back to Ukraine. This is the only option that will guarantee peace and security in Europe.
We must all remain uncompromising and united in our resolve to do everything possible to ensure that Ukraine prevails and that its independence, freedom and sovereign borders are fully restored. And then, and only then, will we all be able to truly celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day throughout the world.

Цей день, 24 серпня, є особливо хвилюючим для кожного українця, незалежно від віри, місця чи мови. Це день, який нагадує всім нам про покоління наших предків, які творили нашу націю та віддали своє життя за вільну та незалежну Україну. І хоча сьогодні лише 32-а річниця Незалежності, наша історико-культурна національна ідентичність сягає корінням у часи давньої Київської Русі. Ми маємо історію, якою пишаємося, і яку, на жаль, Росія протягом століть руйнує та спотворює, вбиваючи мільйони українців та намагаючись стерти українську націю з лиця землі.
На очах світу Україна демонструє свою відданість Незалежності – відкидаючи контроль, варварство, тиранію та вплив Росії. У свою чергу вільний світ дуже рішуче відповідає на тотальну війну Росії, надаючи неймовірну підтримку Україні та українцям. За майбутній мир, свободу та незалежність Європи сьогодні продовжується боротьба на українській землі. Лише з 2014 року Росія жорстоко вчинила незліченну кількість військових злочинів і злочинів проти людства в Україні. Тисячі невинних мирних жителів були вбиті, включаючи дітей; тисячі постраждали від варварства тортур і зґвалтувань, тисячі українських дітей були викрадені та вивезені до Росії, а тисячі дітей залишилися сиротами.

The University of Manchester has appointed the first-ever Professor of Comparative and Ukrainian Politics in the UK and the wider English-speaking world, in a move that demonstrates the leading role of the University when it comes to the study of contemporary Ukraine.

4th of September, Ian Sutherland presents his latest book, Catastrophe – a literary, historical novel, set in Ukraine during the aftermath of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster in 1986 – in Daunt Books, Holland Park.
The story involves an ex-ballerina, now in exile and dying of cancer in New York City, recounting the desperate search for her nuclear physicist husband after the explosion. In writing, he undertook two research trips to Ukraine and did extensive research (including technical, being a Mechanical Engineer by training) and grew to love and appreciate the landscapes and people.
At his recent South African launch, he was interviewed by the Honorary President of the Ukrainian Association of South Africa who worked at the UNDP Chornobyl Programme. A portion of the proceeds of their Cape Town launches was donated to the Ukrainian charity Voices of Children. We were very pleased to welcome a number of guests from the British Library, British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Oxford Bodleian Library, Polish Library & Museum and scholars from Ukraine last night to a private guided tour of the Shevchenko Library & Archive (SL&A) given by the Library’s Curator, Dr Ludmila Pekarska. It was a pleasure to see everyone and we look forward to collaborating on various possible joint ventures in the future.
Formed in 1947, the Shevchenko Library & Archive is one of the largest Ukrainian emigre libraries in Europe. Its premises were recently refurbished and last night’s visitors had the opportunity to compare the old with the new.

We’re delighted to welcome Rugby to the AUGB Branch family following their inaugural meeting on 15 July, which was attended by Deputy Mayor of Rugby, Simon Ward. Rugby was previously a Branch but was dissolved in 2007, so their revival is even more welcome. Testament to the long history of our association in this country, newly elected chair Anna Nepip-Frankis follows in the footsteps of her father Teodor ‘Ted’ Nepip who was the former longstanding Chair. With a new generation of members, we look forward to working together for the benefit of all Ukrainians and those of Ukrainian descent in the Rugby area!
The AGM was followed by a special presentation of a signed football from the Ukrainian national team when they played England in March. This was kindly donated by Keith Lawson, who presented the signed ball to 8-year-old Yegor to take back to his father in Ukraine.

On Saturday 8 July, 75 AUGB branch delegates, Board members and guests met in Nottingham for AUGB’s 78th Annual General Meeting. We were also pleased to welcome Eduard Fesko, Minister Counsellor of the Ukrainian Embassy, who spoke about the 500th day of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and our certainty of victory, and representatives of the Association of Ukrainian Women, the Association of Ukrainian Teachers and the Ukrainian Information Service (UIS).
We also received messages of support from the Ukrainian World Congress, Bishop Kenneth Nowakowski, the Ukrainian Youth Association, UIS, the Ukrainian Religious Society of Saint Sophia and (jointly) from Support Ukraine and British-Ukraine Aid.
AUGB Chair Petro Rewko warmly welcomed those present, especially delegates from new Branches in Eastbourne and Dundee, and guests from Malvern, shortly to be formed as a Branch, and we remembered, with a minute’s silence, members of the community who had died over the last year and all the defenders who have given their lives for Ukraine’s freedom.
In addition to the formal AGM proceedings, which included the re-election of Petro Rewko as AUGB Chair and a new Board of Directors, there were lively group discussions on key topics, including government policy towards displaced Ukrainians after December 2024, encouraging new activists, improving communications and opportunities for enhancing activities.
AUGB Nottingham presented their ‘Peace Bicycle’ project and encouraged other Branches to join in with their fundraising plans.
We thank AUGB Nottingham for their warm hospitality and congratulate Petro Rewko and the Board on their election. We look forward to another year of fruitful collaboration for the benefit of our communities and Ukraine!

Ukraine has endured Russia’s illegal and brutal full-scale invasion for 500 days. The consequences have been devastating. War crimes have stained the land, with civilian infrastructure continually attacked and innocent lives shattered. Ordinary people, including children, have been kidnapped, tortured, and raped. 78% of Ukrainians have had a friend or relative injured or killed by Russia’s war.
It is not only the lives of many that have been affected by Russia’s war. Ukraine's environment has been ravaged. The Khakhovka dam, once a symbol of prosperity, now stands as a haunting reminder of ecocide—a stark testament to the destruction inflicted upon Ukraine, its people, and on fertile agricultural land that fed millions around the world.
In the midst of these dark times, there is light and hope. We thank the UK government and all parliamentary parties for their resolve in providing both military and humanitarian support to Ukraine and for their faith in seeking to fully restore Ukraine’s sovereign territory, full independence, and a better democratic future. We are equally grateful to every UK organization, including all local authorities and the entire British population, for their incredible compassion and for the shelter, comfort, and support that they have provided and continue to provide to Ukrainian refugees while war rages in their country.
The Ukraine Recovery Conference in London, chaired by the UK government, brought together international support for Ukraine, raising over $60 billion for recovery and reconstruction. The UK alone committed over £4.7 billion in non-military assistance. These funds will address Ukraine's urgent recovery needs, promote private sector investment, drive innovative recovery through technology, and contribute to global security, prosperity, and the international rule of law. We look forward to these pledges being turned into positive action.
The UK has also introduced a new sanctions package, ensuring that sanctions remain in place until Russia pays for the damage that it has caused. The joint statement by the Governments of Ukraine and the UK emphasizes the event's role in unlocking Ukraine's potential, defeating Russian aggression, and promoting global security, prosperity, and the rule of law.
We look to the future, but Ukraine’s struggle isn't over. Ukraine's fights not only for its own sovereignty and territorial integrity but for the security and stability of the whole of Europe. We must continue to stand united against Russia's aggression and continue to support Ukraine until there is a just and lasting peace, with every perpetrator of aggression and every war criminal brought to justice.
The path to peace and prosperity will never be easy, but with determination and continuing support, Ukraine will rise, and this will be a testament to the indomitable spirit of its people, the unequivocal support of the free democratic world, and the triumph of hope over adversity.
CТІЙКІСТЬ СЕРЕД СПУСТОШЕННЯ: 500 ДНІВ ВІЙНИ
Вже 500 днів Україна потерпає від незаконного та жорстокого повномасштабного вторгнення Росії. Наслідки цієї війни є шокуючими. Воєнні злочини сплюндрували нашу землю, цивільна інфраструктура постійно піддається нападам, забираючи невинні життя. Звичайних людей, у тому числі дітей, викрадають, катують і ґвалтують. 78% українців мають друзів чи родичів, що були поранені або вбиті під час російської війни.
Російська війна вплинула не лише на життя багатьох. Екологія України спустошена. Каховська дамба, яка колись була символом процвітання, тепер є довічним нагадуванням про екоцид — яскраве свідчення руйнування, заподіяного Україні, її народу та родючим сільськогосподарським землям, які годували мільйони людей у всьому світі.
Посеред цих темних часів є світло і надія. Ми дякуємо уряду Великої Британії та всім парламентським партіям за їхню рішучість у наданні військової та гуманітарної підтримки Україні та за їхнє прагнення повністю відновити суверенну територію України, її повну незалежність та краще демократичне майбутнє. Ми також вдячні кожній британській організації, в т.ч. всім місцевим органам влади та всьому населенню Британії, за їхнє неймовірне співчуття, притулок, розраду й підтримку, яку вони надали і продовжують надавати українським біженцям в часі коли вирує війна в Україні.
Конференція з питань відновлення України в Лондоні під головуванням уряду Великої Британії активізувала міжнародну підтримку для України, стягнувши понад 60 мільярдів доларів зобов’язань на відновлення та реконструкцію. Компонент невійськової допомоги самої Великої Британії перевищить 4,7 мільярда фунтів стерлінгів. Ці кошти будуть спрямовані на вирішення нагальних потреб України у відновленні, сприятимуть інвестиціям приватного сектору, інноваційному відновленню за допомогою технологій та глобальній безпеці, процвітанню та міжнародному верховенству права. Ми з нетерпінням чекаємо, щоб ці зобов’зання перетворилися на позитивні дії.
Велика Британія також запровадила новий пакет санкцій, гарантуючи, що санкції залишатимуться в силі, доки Росія не заплатить за завдану нею шкоду. У спільній заяві Урядів України та Великої Британії підкреслюється роль конференції у розкритті потенціалу України, перемозі над російською агресією та сприянні глобальній безпеці, процвітанню та верховенству права.
Ми дивимося в майбутнє, але боротьба України не закінчилася. Україна бореться не лише за власний суверенітет і територіальну цілісність, а й за безпеку та стабільність усієї Європи. Ми повинні продовжувати об’єднано протистояти агресії Росії та підтримувати Україну до часу встановлення справедливого і тривалого миру, і доки кожен винуватець агресії та воєнний злочинець будуть притягнуті до відповідальності.
Шлях до стану миру та процвітання ніколи не буде легким. Проте, з рішучістю та постійною підтримкою Україна таки підніметься, а це буде свідченням незламності духу її народу, однозначної підтримки вільного демократичного світу та перемоги надії над лихом.
Over the weekend, AUGB Chair, Petro Rewko represented AUGB at the Ukrainian Youth Association’s annual rally. As an active member of the UYA and former leader of the UYA’s summer camps, it was a particular pleasure to celebrate the UYA’s 75th anniversary with them and enjoy the great displays of cultural talent from its members around the country. Then it was off to Warsaw for a conference on ‘Engaging the Ukrainian Diaspora in Reconstruction and Development’. He was invited, along with Chair of the Association of Ukrainian Women Iryna Terlecky by the University of Warwick and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). The conference included diaspora organisations from Germany and Poland, along with other OSCE staff and representatives from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). Discussion ranged on various topics, including using the skills and knowledge of the diaspora, accountability for war crimes, minority, gender and human rights and opportunities for the diaspora to strengthen their role. He was able to talk about the work that AUGB and its branches have been doing and to lay the groundwork for further co-operation with the organisers and participants.
На вихідних Голова СУБ Петро Ревко представляв СУБ на щорічному з’їзді Спілки Української Молоді. Як активний член СУМ і колишній лідер літніх таборів СУМ, йому було особливо приємно святкувати 75-ліття СУМ і насолоджуватися великими проявами культурного таланту його членів по всій країні. Після з’їзду Петро поїхав до Варшави на конференцію «Залучення української діаспори до відбудови та розвитку». Його разом із головою Товариства українок Іриною Терлецькою запросили до Уорікського університету та Організації з безпеки та співробітництва в Європі (ОБСЄ). У конференції взяли участь організації діаспори з Німеччини та Польщі, а також інші співробітники ОБСЄ та представники Бюро ОБСЄ з демократичних інститутів і прав людини (БДІПЛ). Обговорення велося на різні теми, зокрема використання навичок і знань діаспори, відповідальність за військові злочини, права меншин, гендерні права та права людини, а також можливості діаспори посилити свою роль. Петро мав змогу розповісти про роботу, яку веде СУБ та її відділи, та закласти основу для подальшої співпраці з організаторами та учасниками.
June 22 - Day of Remembrance and Mourning for the Victims of War in Ukraine
Every year, the Ukrainian people honor the memory of the millions whose lives were cut short during the Second World War. Grief and pain touched every Ukrainian home.
The Second World War was the most brutal global conflict, claiming the lives of an estimated 50 to 85 million people. Ukraine endured irreversible losses, with 8-10 million individuals perishing in combat, terror from occupying forces, famine, and forced deportations. Over 700 cities and towns and 28,000 villages, fell victim to the ravages of war.
For Ukraine, the period from 1941 to 1945 is a national tragedy, not just a history of participation in the bloodiest and largest conflict of the 20th century. As part of the USSR, Ukraine had to defend the interests of a great power.

It is our sacred duty to preserve forever the memory of those who fought for victory in this horrendous war, and those who fell victim to terror. The life stories of these individuals show true courage and patriotism for our present generation.
Today, as we suffer from a new bloody military aggression against our country, we once again understand the price of freedom, peace, and security. The great people of Ukraine once again fight to defend our borders, our freedom, and our democratic choice.
Therefore, on this day, 22 June, we honor the memory of all those whose lives have been tragically disrupted and destroyed in this and all dreadful wars! May the fallen be forever remembered. We salute the living heroes with respect and gratitude. May they all return home safe and may Ukraine prevail in its defense of peace and security for the whole of Europe!

Щороку український народ вшановує світлу пам’ять мільйонів тих, чиє життя обірвала Друга світова війна. Горе і біль торкнулися кожної української оселі.
Друга світова війна була найжорстокішим світовим конфліктом, який забрав життя від 50 до 85 мільйонів людей. Україна зазнала безповоротних втрат, 8-10 мільйонів людей загинули внаслідок бойових дій, окупаційного терору, голоду та примусових депортацій. Понад 700 міст і селищ, а також 28 тисяч сіл стали жертвами лихоліття війни.
Для України період з 1941 по 1945 рік - справжня національна трагедія, а не тільки участь у найкривавішому і масштабному конфлікті XX століття. Включена до складу СРСР, Україна повинна була відстоювати інтереси великої держави.
Українське населення перенесло:
Наш святий обов’язок – вічно зберегти пам’ять про тих, хто виборював перемогу в цій жахливій війні, тих, хто став жертвою нацистського терору. Життєві історії цих людей демонструють справжню мужність і патріотизм нашого сучасного покоління.

This is a weekly event for MSPs and members of the public to come together in a positive and inclusive way before proceedings at Holyrood begin.
Tanya highlighted to the MSPs how Ukraine has overcome centuries of adversity to keep its language and culture. She spoke passionately and movingly about the importance of keeping your culture and language alive, the importance of speaking Ukrainian and the need to abandon everything related to the terrorist state that is trying to destroy Ukraine and everything Ukrainian.

“Зовсім недавно я почала свою роботу як менеджер спільнот у Союзі Українців у Великій Британії і щоб краще зрозуміти особливості спільнот, поїхала з візитами у осередки.
По всій країні є будинки української спільноти. Це гарні будинки, на яких майорять українські прапори. Зараз українськими прапорами нікого не здивуєш, але синьо-жовті стяги тут уже 60-70 років. Оскільки українці, які опинились у Великобританії після другої світової війни купили будинки для громади, бладнали усередині місце для проведенням часу разом, для забави, зустрічей; сцену, щоб танцювати народні танці…
Ці люди переїхали не маючи нічого і нікого тут. Їм доводилось багато працювати, починати життя спочатку. Але це не завадило їм відкладати гроші, щоб купити будинки для української спільноти. Місця, де на стінах висять портрети Шевченка та Франка, а у кожній кімнаті лунає рідна українська.
Ці будинки досі живі, наповнені людьми, важливою українською атрибутикою, а на сцені все ще танцюють народні танці. Правда тепер це вже внуки та правнуки тих, хто створив нашу спільноту тут.
Зараз ці будинки відчинили свої двері для українців, які переїхали до Британії після 24го лютого, щоб стати українським домом і для них.
Така сила єднання захоплює і надихає. Тепер стає ще зрозуміліше як зараз українцям вдається, об’єднавшись, купувати дрони, байрактари чи супутник.”
Yesterday we heard the terrible news that on the night of June 6, the Russians caused another environmental disaster by blowing up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant dam. Almost 80 settlements in the Kherson Region are suffering massive flooding, endangering the lives of thousands of civilians, destroying homes, farmland and livestock.
The Kakhovka Dam is an integral part of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) and performs several important functions, such as the accumulation and distribution of water resources, the production of electricity, and the regulation of water supplies.
This dam plays a key role in providing water to the dry farming regions of southern Ukraine and ensuring balance in the energy system. In case of increased demand for electricity, the dam can be used for additional production.
A critical issue is the drinking water supply. If the level of the dam drops even by a meter, drinking water intakes will not work leaving the population without drinking water.
Volunteers from The Ukrainian Red Cross and Caritas Ukraine, the charities we continue to support through our AUGB GoFundMe Help Ukraine Appeal have already sprung into action to help evacuate those whose homes are flooded or destroyed and to provide clean drinking water and medical aid.

Вчора ми всі почули жахливу новину про те, що в ніч на 6 червня росіяни спричинили чергову екологічну катастрофу, підірвавши дамбу Каховської ГЕС. Майже 80 населених пунктів Херсонщини опинилися під загрозою затоплення, руйнуючи життя тисяч мирних жителів, будинки, сільськогосподарські угіддя та худобу.
Каховська дамба є складовою частиною Каховської гідроелектростанції (ГЕС) і виконує ряд важливих функцій, таких як накопичення та розподіл водних ресурсів, виробництво електроенергії та регулювання водного режиму.

On International Children's Day, it is essential to remember and advocate for the rights and well-being of all children worldwide. Every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment where they can grow, learn, and thrive. However, there are too many distressing cases about Ukrainian children forcibly separated from their families and taken into Russian custody during the ongoing illegal war against Ukraine.
Actions like this demonstrate a grave violation of children's rights and are potential war crimes. Children have the right to be protected from war and to grow up in an environment free from fear and violence. They should not be used as pawns or subjected to forced separation from their families. International Children's Day serves as a sad reminder of the hundreds of Ukrainian children who have been murdered, those who are losing their childhood because of constant bombing, and all those who continue to suffer from Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine.
We must raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding children's rights, especially in times of crisis, conflict and war. Governments, international organisations, and civil society must work together to protect children, provide support to affected families, and hold accountable those responsible for the violation of children's rights.
On this International Children's Day, let us remember Ukraine’s children, and children everywhere, and reaffirm our commitment to creating a world where every child can live in safety, receive a quality education, and have the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
У Міжнародний день захисту дітей важливо пам’ятати та відстоювати права та благополуччя всіх дітей у всьому світі. Кожна дитина заслуговує на безпечне та сприятливе середовище, де вона може рости, вчитися та процвітати. Однак є надто багато сумних випадків про українських дітей, яких насильно разлучили зі своїми родинами та взяли під опіку з боку Росії під час триваючої незаконної війни проти України.
Подібні дії свідчать про грубе порушення прав дітей і є потенційними військовими злочинами. Діти мають право бути захищеними від війни та рости в середовищі, вільному від страху та насильства. Їх не можна використовувати як пішаків або примусово відлучати від сімей. Міжнародний день захисту дітей є сумним нагадуванням про сотні українських дітей, які були вбиті, тих, хто втрачає дитинство через постійні бомбардування, і всіх тих, хто продовжує страждати від жорстокої війни Росії проти України.
Ми повинні підвищувати обізнаність про важливість захисту прав дітей, особливо під час криз, конфліктів і війни. Уряди, міжнародні організації та громадянське суспільство повинні співпрацювати, щоб захистити дітей, надати підтримку постраждалим сім’ям і притягнути до відповідальності винних у порушенні прав дітей.

In a historic debate on 25 May, the UK Parliament recognised that the Holodomor of 1932-33 was an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people.
The motion was moved by Pauline Latham MP, Conservative MP for South Derbyshire, a good friend of our AUGB Derby Branch and a longstanding campaigner for recognition of the Holodomor as genocide. She spoke movingly about the millions in Ukraine murdered by starvation and the parallels with Russia’s actions in Ukraine today.
“The Holodomor was, to my mind and to paraphrase Raphael Lemkin, the archetypal genocide. The USSR murdered millions of Ukrainians, using policies of forced starvation and forced migration, reminiscent of what is going on in Ukraine today. Stalin in the 1930s, like Putin today, was aiming to destroy the nation of Ukraine and the concept of Ukrainian identity, so I hope that today we will vote to recognise the Holodomor as a genocide. Then we can send a clear message to Putin, and to the world, that the UK Parliament stands with Ukraine and that war crimes, either historical or current, will not be tolerated.”
The Government spokesman, Leo Docherty, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Foreign Office, reiterated the government line that the Holodomor was a horrific crime against humanity but that its recognition as genocide was a legal matter which was being pursued, along with all Russian war crimes in Ukraine.
Parliament’s recognition of the Holodomor as genocide is not binding on the Government but is a very welcome further step for Ukraine and Ukrainians across the world.
AUGB will continue to promote awareness of the Holodomor, with such initiatives as the AUGB Holodomor Essay Prize Competition, information about which is distributed amongst 5000 British teachers every year and which encourages pupils to investigate further the Holodomor and how it came about. We will continue to press for the UK Government to follow the many other countries around the world that have already recognised the Holodomor as genocide.

Під час історичних дебатів 25 травня парламент Великобританії визнав Голодомор 1932-33 років актом геноциду українського народу.
Пропозицію ініціювала Полін Летам, депутат від Консервативної партії від Південного Дербіширу, хороший друг нашого відділу СУБ у Дербі та давній борець за визнання Голодомору геноцидом. Вона зворушливо розповіла про мільйони людей, що загинули від голоду в Україні та про паралелі з діями Росії в Україні сьогодні.
«Голодомор, як на мене, та перефразуючи Рафаеля Лемкіна, був архетипом геноциду. СРСР убив мільйони українців, застосовуючи політику примусового голоду та вимушеної міграції, що нагадує те, що зараз відбувається в Україні. Сталін у 1930-х, як і Путін сьогодні, мав на меті знищити українську націю та концепцію української ідентичності, тому я сподіваюся, що сьогодні ми проголосуємо за визнання Голодомору геноцидом. Тоді ми зможемо надіслати чітке повідомлення Путіну та всьому світу, що парламент Великої Британії підтримує Україну і ніколи не буде миритися з військовими злочинами, як історичними, так і теперішніми».
Речник уряду Лео Дочерті, парламентський заступник держсекретаря з питань закордонних справ, повторив позицію уряду про те, що Голодомор був жахливим злочином проти людяності, але визнання його геноцидом є юридичною справою, яка вимагає переслідування як і усі російські військові злочини в Україні.
Те, що парламент визнав Голодомор геноцидом не є обов’язковим для Уряду, але є дуже бажаним подальшим кроком для України та українців у всьому світі.
СУБ продовжуватиме сприяти обізнаності про Голодомор за допомогою таких ініціатив, як Конкурс есе про Голодомор СУБ, інформацію про який ми щороку розповсюджуємо серед 5000 британських учителів і який заохочує учнів до подальшого дослідження Голодомору та того, як він виник. Ми продовжуватимемо наполягати на тому, щоб уряд Великобританії наслідував багато інших країн світу, які вже визнали Голодомор геноцидом.
The special exhibition at Sheffield Anglican Cathedral provided a glimpse into the lives of Ukrainians residing in Sheffield one year after the full-scale Russian invasion. Organised by the Sheffield Branch of The Association of Ukrainians In Great Britain and supported by Sheffield Abbeydale Rotary, the exhibition showcased photographs capturing Ukrainian life in Sheffield since February 24th, 2022.
The exhibition depicted various Ukrainian communities, clubs, and individuals in Sheffield, revealing the resilience and integration of Ukrainian families in the city. The exhibition not only shed light on the stories of those who sought refuge in Sheffield but also conveyed the personal moments and emotions of Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes.
"Suzie Britch, 33, a primary school teacher said: ”I thought it was really nice to see how settled the families from Ukraine are in Sheffield and what a great Ukrainian community there is in Sheffield . One of the children in the exhibition goes to my school, Sasha from Sheffield Hallam Primary school, and it is great to see what he gets up to outside of school.”

Цього року Британія гостинно запропонувала прийняти пісенний конкурс Євробачення 2023 від імені України. Ця яскрава подія відбувається саме зараз в Ліверпулі.
Місто водночас перетворилось на велику сцену. Не враховуючи сам конкурс, музика лунає скрізь – на великих та малих сценах Ліверпуля, в кафе, магазинах і навіть просто на вулицях міста.
Приємно бачити скрізь жовто-сині кольори, які акцентують на тому, що саме Україна є господинею цьогорічного Євробачення. Особливо захоплює атмосфера свята – місцеве населення та туристи, які приїхали підтримати свої країни, перетворюють локацію на карнавал.
Яскраві рожеві капелюхи на підтримку тогорічного переможця Kalush Orchestra, вишиванки, чудернацькі костюми, блискучі вбрання – все це створює піднесений настрій.
Український гурт TVORCHI автоматично потрапив у фінал 13 травня на правах країни-переможця. Дует виступатиме під номером 19 з треком Heart of Steel.

This year, Ukraine has the honour of hosting the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 with the gracious support of the United Kingdom. The vibrant event is currently taking place in the lively city of Liverpool.
Liverpool has transformed into a grand stage where music resonates in every corner. Music fills the air, from the main stages to smaller venues, cafes, shops, and even the streets, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
The city is adorned with vibrant displays of yellow and blue, symbolizing Ukraine's role as the host of this year's Eurovision Song Contest. The festive ambiance is genuinely captivating, with locals and tourists joining the celebration, representing their countries with pride.
The streets are full of bright pink hats in support of last year's winner, Kalush Orchestra. People wear embroidered shirts, whimsical costumes, and shiny outfits, all contributing to the joyous atmosphere.
The Ukrainian band TVORCHI, as the winning country, has automatically secured a spot in the final on May 13th. In the Grand Finale, they will perform their track "Heart of Steel," position 19.

Ahead of the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, the UK National Archives have released a fascinating tour around their materials about Ukraine and Ukrainians in the UK. The collections feature information about AUGB's own Shevchenko Library and Archive, information about the Association of Ukrainian Women's archive housed at the University of East London, the Metelyk dance group from Reading, and the Ukrainian Video-Archive society based in Bradford. A historical legacy to be proud of!

A Ukrainian community memorial in Bradford and two Ukrainian churches in Salford and Oldham have been granted Grade II listed status by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), on Historic England’s advice.
A further three churches in Manchester and Bradford and a community centre in Huddersfield - which are already listed - have had their stories updated on the National Heritage List for England (NHLE) to reflect the significance of their Ukrainian history.
For over a hundred years, people from Ukraine have called the towns and cities in the north of England home. These places help tell the story of Ukrainian life, culture and worship in the region.
"Highlighting the stories of Ukrainian communities in the north of England is a wonderful way of supporting our heritage at a time when, once again, it is under threat in Ukraine. This is welcome recognition of the role that culture and traditions play in safe-guarding our way of life." Revd. Huntingdon Mayor David Cole and Town Council hosted a wonderful Vesnianky social evening, which means Spring, on the 29th of April 2023. Hundreds of community members, hosts and refugees stood united for peace and were treated to sensational performances from the Prolisok dancers as appeared on the BBC One Show, Zhnyva dance band, Buckden Ukrainian Choir, singers Tetyana Makovei and Glastonbury favourite Inessa Semianiv.
The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) Waltham Cross branch together with Huntingdon Council organised the benefit to celebrate Ukraine’s vibrant culture and auction prizes donated by local businesses to raise vital aid. In the historic Huntingdon Town Hall surround by old masters, the Buckden Ukrainian choir including many refugees showed hope, resilience, and smiles as they sang a medley of traditional songs. There was further fun as audience members tried out a variety of Ukrainian dance steps.
Roman Pasika Chairman of AUGB Waltham Cross said. “We are grateful to every volunteer, every business, every artist who donated their goods or services and to David Cole, Cambridgeshire communities and all the hosts for their continued support”.
More than 160 people attended the event, supported by some 30 volunteers. Everyone enjoyed the warm atmosphere, which brought respite for many present, from ongoing concerns for loved ones under continuing Russian bombardment. Viktoria a refugee from Irpin who attended the evening live streamed performances to Ukraine to show the continued support from UK communities.
Huntingdon Mayor David Cole wowed the audience saying in Ukrainian “We welcome you to Huntingdon, you are our friends, you are our brothers and sisters”. Other dignitaries included Jonathan Djanogly Member of Parliament (MP) for Huntingdon, Richard, and Nan Taplin Mayor and Mayoress of Godmanchester.

On Tuesday 2 May together with members of AUGB Liverpool we were invited to the official unveiling of the Ukrainian Peace Monument at Strawberry Fields Liverpool.
Commissioned by the Californian based artist coalition, the Global Peace Initiative after a worldwide search in 2022 chose sixteen year old Mexican art prodigy Osbeit Garcia-Morales to design the sculpture. Cast in aluminium, the statue depicts a person holding aloft a book, dove and the Ukrainian flag, with messages in keeping with John Lennon's anthem 'Give Peace a Chance'. It will be a temporary feature at Strawberry Fields home of the Salvation Army until it can be safely moved to Ukraine. A four foot replica was unveiled at the Ukrainian Centre in Los Angeles.
The Statue was unveiled by Liverpool Lord May Councillor Roy Gladden.

Russian aggression in Ukraine has been going on for over 9 years, and it has been an entire year since the Ukrainian resistance against the invaders’ full-scale war started. A year ago, The Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain started to provide significant support to Ukrainians. And we are thankful for your kindness.
Ukrainians faced massive missile attacks, lack of electricity and heat, complete destruction of 123,000 residential buildings, 406 schools and kindergartens, and 540 hospitals. Cultural monuments, administrative centers, universities, and even recreation areas, bridges, and roads — the invaders destroyed everything in their way. According to the authorities, the total damages amount to $600-750 000 000 000.
The war brought death to many families, killing their loved ones: more than 8,000 civilians died, of which 487 were children, and we know of thousands of the country's defenders who have died.
More than 7 000 000 people have been internally displaced, forced to leave their homes and seek refuge away from the frontline, and another 8 000 000 women and children became refugees abroad.
2022 became a true challenge — the full-scale war threatened the existence of the Ukrainian nation itself. But the Ukrainians did not back down. They persevered and became stronger. The war boosted their desire to live and unite, strengthening their belief in kindness.

After all, we are not afraid of new challenges, but on the contrary — we unite to resist together to pandemics, natural disasters, dangers, and war"

Our mutual results speak for themselves: more than 10 000 000 people have already received the help they needed. And each of our joint projects strengthens Ukrainians' faith in genuine kindness. Implementing all these good deeds without support would be very challenging.

What lessons can we learn from the UK’s Ukraine welcome effort to date? And what are the implications for wider refugee policy and practice? Speakers at our recent Welcome and Safety briefing event shared these insights.

“Ukrainians have responded amazingly well,” said Hanya Dezyk, Deputy Chair of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain, commenting on developments since the Russian invasion in 2022.
She said the 165,000 who had fled to the UK had shown dedication and strength. Many were highly skilled, focused on learning English and contributing through volunteering and organising — possibly due to Ukraine’s strong civil society culture. Around 60% had found work, according to the Office of National Statistics.
Support from Ukrainian associations, including those established in the UK after World War II, had also made a difference: welcoming newcomers at ports of entry, building strong links with local authorities, arranging English classes, advising on job hunting and registering with GPs and schools, hosting drop-ins with government departments to sort out visa issues, etc.
For Dmitri Macmillen, Head of Immigration from Work Rights Centre, the charity’s strong ties to the UK’s Ukrainian community before the invasion, particularly seasonal workers, had also been vital.
This meant the charity could react quickly and better support new arrivals at risk of poverty and homelessness.

We are delighted to announce that Hannah Beaton-Hawryluk, AUGB Edinburgh Holova, has been announced by the Royal Voluntary Service as a Coronation Champion!
Selected as 1 of 500 from 5000 nominations, Hannah has been recognised for her leadership of AUGB Edinburgh since February 2022 and the support shown to our newly arrived Ukrainian guests over the last 15 months.
Commenting, Hannah said ”It’s a privilege to be named as a Coronation Champion in 2023. This award is in recognition of the 22,000 Ukrainians who have been displaced from Ukraine and now call Scotland home. Hopefully the small part that myself and my team have played here at AUGB Edinburgh, has made resettling in Scotland an easier and smoother process. We are here to support you as long as you call Scotland your home”
The panel of judges for the awards was made up of a range of senior third sector leaders, chaired by the Queen Consort, who sifted every nomination to select the final 500.
Hannah will be representing AUGB Edinburgh at the Royal Garden Party in July.
It’s been a while since we posted an update, but the work of our partners in Ukraine doesn't stop. This update focuses on the latest news from AICM.
At the end of February, AICM provided medical and other products to the Poltava Regional Psychiatric Hospital, which is a centre for evacuees from Kherson and Bakhmut, where Russian attacks are brutal and continuous. This will cover the needs of 700 patients for six months.
In the last week alone, thanks to the help that you have provided along with other international donors, AICM provided $1,2 million in humanitarian aid to 90,000 citizens of 11 towns of Sumy Oblast still under bombardment by Russian forces, including medicines, hygiene products, generators, food, blankets, and stoves.
Although the winter is slowly coming to an end, Russia continues to attack civilian targets. Families are still being displaced as they flee their homes, while those who cannot leave continue to be in desperate need of help.
Thanks to your kind hearts, we will continue to do whatever we can to support our partners in Ukraine so that they can help the innocent and vulnerable victims of Russia’s war. We’re grateful to you all for your continuing generosity!

AUGB’s CEO, Fedir Kurlak, participated and chaired the Inaugural General Meeting which took place on Thursday 16th March, during which Bohdan Kruk was unanimously elected Branch Chair (back row, third from left).

365 DAYS OF UKRAINIAN RESISTANCE
One year ago, on 24 February, Russia launched an illegal and unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Russia’s barbaric war against Ukraine began in 2014 with the illegal annexation of Crimea and parts of Eastern Ukraine. Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 has now created the largest humanitarian crisis in Europe since the Second World War, disrupted the food supply to some of the world’s most vulnerable nations, and has threatened European and world peace.
Over the past year, Russia has:
Russia’s leadership and all those responsible must be brought to justice and held accountable for their crime of aggression and war crimes against the Ukrainian nation.
A country that is consciously committing war crimes on a large scale must not be allowed to have a seat on any international body. Russia should be immediately suspended from the UN and UN Security Council until its war criminals have been brought to justice, sovereign Ukrainian territories have been returned, and full reparations for all damages have been made. Russian athletes – many of whom are members of Russia’s armed forces - should not be allowed to compete in any international sporting events, including the Olympics.
We are grateful to the UK Government, devolved governments, political leaders, the British people and all spheres of UK society for their unwavering support for Ukraine and displaced Ukrainians over the past year.

The year that is passing since the beginning of Russia's military invasion is a year of unprecedented solidarity of Ukraine within and with the whole world.

AUGB community members from Edinburgh and Glasgow, Mr Andriy Kuslii from the Consulate of Ukraine in Edinburgh, together with displaced Ukrainians were invited to attend the annual Consular Corps reception at Edinburgh Castle.
The theme of the evening was 'Solidarity with Ukraine' and First Minister Nicola Sturgeon reaffirmed the Scottish government's solidarity with Ukraine, and praised the international community's response to Russia's aggression.

As the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine approaches, humanitarian needs, sadly, are still as acute as ever, but regardless of the dangers, our three charity partners in Ukraine continue to provide essential aid to the most affected areas.
AICM have sent us this update from their most recent delivery to Chernihiv, a city in Northern Ukraine, which has been badly affected by shelling and bombardment of critical facilities. “Amid the chaos, air raids and power cuts, we continue to bring your aid to hospitals and tens of thousands of patients. Here in Chernihiv, last Thursday, still bombarded during our visit, we delivered 5 tons of medicines to the 6 main hospitals in the region (General, District, Oncology, Paediatrics, Cardiology and Regional). Without your help, these hospitals would have had to close part of their activities. Thank you for your support.
’The Ukrainian Red Cross has been delivering food, water and supplying generators, blankets and other equipment to ‘Invincibility’ stations and shelters, where people can go to stay warm during power outages. They are also expanding their programme of psychological support for children and their outreach programme for landmine awareness. Their Emergency Response teams continue to evacuate the elderly and disabled from areas being shelled, providing emergency medical and psychological first aid.
The Donetsk Branch of Caritas was at the forefront of providing support to victims of a Russian missile attack that struck an apartment building in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, in which over 40 civilians, including children, were killed, providing emergency food for victims and first responders, as well as helping with rescue and evacuation.A year on, your donations, large and small, are still making a real difference on the ground.

On Tuesday 31st January 2023 AUGB Chairman, Petro Rewko, was invited to St George's Hall in Liverpool to the official handover of Eurovision from the Mayor of last years host city Turin, to Joanne Anderson of this years host city Liverpool!
Turin mayor Stefano Lo Russo said to Ms Anderson: "A little bit of advice - enjoy the event; include everybody; engage the whole city; be proud for such an incredible international stage for you, for Ukraine and for peace."
Joanne thanked him, adding: "For me, it started on Sunday when we met and you talked about all the wonderful impact that Eurovision has had on your city."I'm really proud to be able to host Eurovision for Liverpool, but especially proud to do it on behalf of Ukraine."
Leicester community’s volunteers have been working tirelessly since February 2022 to collect and send aid to Ukraine and to welcome displaced Ukrainians into their community.
Their sterling work has resulted in the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Award – one of only 70 in Leicester to recognise organisations that have made an outstanding effort to improve their local community.
The award was presented by The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Professor Robert Allison CBE DL to AUGB Branch Chair, Bohdan Prykhidniy at a ceremony at the AUGB Leicester community centre on Sunday 29 January.

The inaugural meeting of our 31st AUGB Branch was held in Eastbourne today. The new members of AUGB prepared a short, informative programme dedicated to the anniversary of the proclamation of Ukrainian independence on 22 January 1918 and the Act of Ukrainian Reunification on 22 January 1919. Those present unanimously voted for the formal resolution to become a new branch of AUGB. They presented the representative of AUGB’s Board of Directors with a commemorative silver tree and a card.
We send our warmest good wishes to the newly elected Chair Mariia Savvinova and her committee. We wish you every success in your work for the benefit of the community in Eastbourne and Ukraine and look forward to fruitful cooperation!

For many different reasons, this year will be a particularly difficult time for many at Christmas.
In this country we have and are seeing the hardships brought on by an economic and energy crisis that will pursue us well into the New Year.
And in Ukraine, we continue to witness the untold suffering unleashed on the Ukrainian population by Russia after its invasion on 24 February this year. In 2022, millions of innocent Ukrainians have been subjected to merciless pain and suffering, with many thousands being needlessly killed or maimed – many of them with life changing injuries. Simultaneously, millions of women and children were forced to flee their homes in tears and in total desperation… while Russia continued and continues to commit callous, barbaric acts of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Ukraine, without care or the slightest remorse.
By contrast, in the free Western World, we have borne witness this year to an unprecedented light of absolute goodness and hope as governments and people from all walks of life extended their hands of true friendship, compassion and support to Ukraine and Ukrainians in their darkest hour of need.
Who can ever forget the unbelievable outpouring of heartfelt goodwill and generosity as thousands upon thousands of lorryloads of humanitarian aid were dispatched from the UK and other countries in the direction of Eastern Europe and Ukraine.
Truly, the whole of the UK community came together in response to Russia’s atrocities. Politicians, businesses, all kinds of organisations, sporting venues, cultural groups, schools and masses and masses of volunteers across the country set aside everything to help. The blue and yellow colours of the Ukrainian flag and message proclaiming that “We stand With Ukraine” were proudly displayed, everywhere to be seen.
And in addition to the many charitable Appeal funds that were created to provide urgent assistance to Ukraine, thanks to the generosity of so many many good people, we were able to raise over £3.3 million along with some incredibly moving messages of support through our Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal.
And the kindness didn’t end there. Through the Homes and Families for Ukraine schemes, tens of thousands of people of goodwill here in the UK threw open their doors to provide unrestricted shelter in their own homes to traumatised Ukrainian mothers and children fleeing the war.
It has all been truly extraordinary!
No words will ever adequately express our gratitude, but from the bottom of our hearts we thank you all – every single adult and child of goodwill in all areas across the country – for your immeasurable kindness, humanity, support, resolve and help.
We wish you all a very blessed and peaceful Christmas, and a better and happier New Year!

Winter has well and truly arrived in Ukraine, with temperatures well below freezing in many parts of the country. Millions are living with blackouts, without light, heating and water because of Russia’s deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure. Our three charity partners in Ukraine are stepping up to the challenge of winter survival.
We’ve now sent a further donation to them specifically to help provide food, warmth and light through the winter, making a total of £1.125m sent to each.
In the last 9 months, AICM alone has helped 4.5 million Ukrainians, 98 communities, 181 hospitals and more than 2,500 primary care centres and is now focused on providing generators, wood burning stoves, blankets and water pumps to communities in the north and east of Ukraine that are suffering the most.
The Ukrainian Red Cross, in addition to providing emergency response services, food and hygiene kits and hot meals, is procuring generators and heaters, including for heating centres that are being set up in many towns and cities. They are also helping to repair buildings so that people have weatherproof shelter over the winter, and continue to evacuate the elderly and invalids from bombed settlements to safer places.
Caritas Ukraine has helped over 2 million people since February and continues to supply thousands of food and hygiene kits every day, as well as much needed psychological support to displaced people, especially children. They have now established 198 shelters for displaced people, community kitchens for hot meals and warmth, and are supplying fuel, blankets and warm clothes to those most in need living near the front line.
Your generous donations have helped provide warmth, food, medicines, trauma support and dignity to countless Ukrainians in need. And with your help, we’ll carry on providing essential humanitarian aid to get Ukraine through the winter.

RUSSIA’S CONTINUING GENOCIDE IN UKRAINE
This year marks the start of the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor in Ukraine, in which millions of Ukrainians and their children were starved to death in a deliberate act of genocide. The Stalinist regime forcibly removed grain and food from Ukrainians and left them to die of cold and hunger. A quarter of those who died were children, left to perish with no humanity or compassion.
In this poignant anniversary year, we are once again seeing acts of Russian terrorism; the weaponising of food and energy supplies with the aim of destroying the Ukrainian nation and its people. In the wider context, Russia’s actions are making the world far less secure. Russia is creating a higher risk of famine in some of the poorest countries in the world and making the winter difficult for everyone in Europe.
The Ukrainian community in Great Britain, along with all democratic nations, must not and will not stand by and just watch Russia’s new acts of genocide unfold. We welcome the European Parliament’s resolution designating Russia a sponsor of state terrorism and the significant military and humanitarian aid that the UK Government continues to provide to Ukraine. This will be ever more important during the winter months.
In commemorating the innocent victims of the Holodomor in 1932–33, our communities are working to remember this tragedy with compassion and hope:
26 November is Ukraine’s National Day of Sorrow for the victims of the Holodomor. We will remember them in our thoughts and prayers, but also through the practical help that we can provide to those in such desperate need.
We want to see a world where tragedies like the Holodomor of 1932 – 33 can never happen again, where dictators can no longer use food and warmth as a weapon to terrorise innocent people and where the light of freedom can always shine brightly. We call on all democratic governments and people of goodwill to continue to support Ukraine and help secure a lasting peace in the whole of Europe.

Dear friends!
Today’s update focuses on the work of the Ukrainian Red Cross’s Emergency Response teams, who are involved in helping and rescuing people in the aftermath of catastrophic events.
This week in particular has been one of huge suffering and sadness as civilian infrastructure and humanitarian convoys have been targeted, with innocent lives lost and many injured.
On 30 September, a strike on a humanitarian convoy in Zaporizhzhia left 118 people wounded, with 30 killed, including 2 children. The Ukrainian Red Cross’s Emergency Response Team tended to the wounded and transported them to medical facilities.
A rocket strike on a residential area in Mykolayiv left buildings without power or water. The Emergency Response team delivered essential aid and helped the emergency services to rescue people from fire and the rubble of destroyed buildings. They were also there to support emergency services after a bus station was shelled in Mykolayiv, in which two people died.
This, along with delivery of essential supplies, establishment of shelters, evacuation of invalids and the elderly, and much more, is the work that your donations are supporting.

All Ukrainians and the democratic world are incensed today by Vladimir Putin’s outrageous claim that the Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzha and Kherson will join Crimea in being illegally and forcibly annexed to Russia.
This is not a result of a democratic and free choice of the people, but an ultimatum issued at the point of a gun. It is an acknowledgement that Russia is losing its war against Ukraine and that the only option that the Kremlin has left is to continue murdering innocent civilians, send in their own ill-equipped civilians to a certain death, and threaten the West with nuclear war.
Human lives and international law mean nothing to Putin or his henchmen and they must be called out for what they are – war criminals at the head of what has become a terrorist state. Every Russian who remains silent is complicit in Russia’s war crimes and terrorist acts.
Ukraine must stand strong – for the sake of the international order and peace in Europe. Democratic governments everywhere must continue to provide military aid to ensure that Russia’s state terrorism is defeated and that all those responsible are brought to justice

On behalf of the Ukrainian community, the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain expresses its deepest sorrow on the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and extends sincere condolences to the whole of the Royal Family.
Her Majesty The Queen has been a towering and authoritative figure in the affairs of the United Kingdom and globally for over 70 years.
We remember particularly her numerous interactions with the Ukrainian diaspora and the kindness and interest she always showed – never more so than in this period of suffering for Ukraine and its people.
In March this year, she made a generous donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee Appeal for humanitarian aid for Ukraine and on the 31st anniversary of Ukraine’s independence wrote to President Zelenskyy:
“In this most challenging year, I hope that today will be a time for the Ukrainian people, both in Ukraine and around the world, to celebrate their culture, history and identity. May we look to better times in the future. Elizabeth R.”
We thank Her Majesty for her unwavering faith, her wisdom and her years of unstinting service – which will always remain an example for us all to follow.
We send His Majesty The King every good wish for a long and illustrious reign.

24 August marks the 31st anniversary of Ukrainian independence. It also marks six months since Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, which has unleashed the murder of thousands of innocent civilians, perpetrated innumerable war crimes, caused millions to flee their homes, weaponised food and energy, and threatened the peace and stability of Europe.
Today, more than ever, Ukraine’s people need the continued united, steadfast support of all democracies to defeat this barbaric invader and to restore peace on our continent. Russia must be brought to justice for the crimes it has committed against civilians and the rules based international order.
Ukrainian men, women and children have been killed, mutilated and raped. Schools, hospitals, orphanages and whole cities have been bombed and razed to the ground. Nuclear facilities are under continual threat of Russia’s bombs. While Ukrainians are denied the right to live peacefully in their own homes, Russia continues to perpetrate acts of terrorism and hundreds of thousands of Russians travel freely throughout Europe, buy assets and secure the advantages of a democratic society for their relatives.
We are grateful to the people of the UK, who have so generously opened their homes and their hearts to displaced Ukrainians and have understood the horror of Russia’s war in Europe. We acknowledge that the UK Government and the Opposition in Parliament have been and are leading supporters of Ukraine in terms of military and humanitarian aid.
But in the face of Russia’s threat to peace and stability, the key priority must be for strengthened Western action to help end Russia’s war so that Ukraine can start to rebuild. This is not a time for us to lessen our support and our efforts. We call on the UK and its partners to:
(a) Sustain and increase the supply of military aid and equipment to Ukraine’s army
(b) Stop issuing visas for Russians to travel, work and study in Europe
(c) Confiscate all Russian assets that are helping to fund this war
(d) Make greater efforts to reduce reliance on Russian gas more quickly
(e) Designate Russia as a sponsor of state terrorism
On this day of Ukraine’s independence, we remember and honour all those who have sacrificed their lives for its freedom – today and throughout history. We weep for the innocent men, women and children who have suffered, and continue to suffer the inhumanity of Russia’s war. But we remain resolute in our belief that Ukraine will overcome, and that we will celebrate once again a truly independent, sovereign nation which will take its rightful place in the European family of democracies.

We have received a new update from AICM, one of our charity partners in Ukraine.
“We are pleased to inform you that, for the first time since February 24 2022, we have managed yesterday to deliver 8 tons of medicines, 20 tons of food, 12 tons of hygiene and 5 tons of generators, tanks, pumps, solar lamps to the territories on the front line east of Kharkiv. We hope to be able to go further for the next delivery.”
Your support has enabled AICM to provide more vital assistance to thousands of civilians who have been forced to live in basements for the last 6 months.
Ukrainian Independence Day, on 24 August also marks six months since Russia illegally invaded Ukraine and brought death and suffering to millions of innocent civilians. We thank you for your donations, large and small, which continue to provide urgently needed humanitarian aid to those in need.

This update is about the work of our partner organisation Caritas Ukraine.
Since the beginning of Russia’s war on Ukraine, the Caritas network of 42 regional centres has provided service for almost 1.4 million people, including emergency water supplies, food and hygiene kits, psychological and social help for children, and has opened 129 shelters for those forced to flee their homes.
These are the words of Iryna, who fled from her home in Chernihiv.
“To save the children's lives, I took them to Volyn, to the city of Novovolynsk. Frightened, horrified, we got acquainted with Caritas. Its people welcomed as relatives, accepted into their family, warmed and listened to, shared pain and presented with happiness. The camp, which was organized in Svityaz lake for displaced persons, became a real healing for all of us. Caritas found an approach to everyone, words of support, warm hugs, and the opportunity to smile sincerely. Every day of our stay here gave us hope and confidence in a happy future for us and our children, for life in a peaceful Ukraine under a calm sky.”
This is just one example of how your generous donations are helping Caritas to bring essential aid and support to those suffering the consequences of war. But Caritas estimates that at least 29% of people in Ukraine are facing food shortages and difficulties with access to clean water, with over 7 million internally displaced.
Millions are living in damaged homes, or in buildings which will not provide sufficient protection from harsh winter conditions. As the winter temperature is predicted to plummet as low as –20 C in parts of the country, this will have a severe impact on millions living in sub-standard conditions or without sufficient access to heating.
Caritas and other partner organisations are scaling up their operations to help now and to prepare for winter. We will continue to support the innocent victims of Russia’s aggression as much as we can and appreciate all the help that you have already given.

AUGB would like to announce that we have opened two new AUGB Branches in Oxford & East Sussex. We welcome these new branches into our growing community and wish them and their new members every success.
Both have held their inaugural AGM & elected a Chair and Committee. They have already been organising events for their communities, sending aid to Ukraine and welcoming displaced Ukrainians. They are working quickly to acquire grants, temporary premises, and planning their future strategies.

A memorial erected in 1948 by Ukrainians in the picturesque Cornish village of Mylor Bridge was yesterday granted Grade II listing by Historic England, and thereby protecting it for future generations.
A special commemorative ceremony was held by the memorial and was attended by the CEO of Historic England, Duncan Wilson, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Nigel Huddleston MP, Ukraine’s Deputy Ambassador to the UK, Taras Krykun, the Bishop of Truro, the Rt Rev Philip Mounstephen, Leader of Cornwall Council, Linda Taylor, local MP Cherilyn Mackrory, AUGB CEO, Fedir Kurlak, members of the local Parish Council, Women’s Institute, Mylor History Group, local residents and newly arrived Displaced Persons from Ukraine, some of who had travelled greater distances within Cornwall to be at the event.
The background
In 1947 a group of 27 young Ukrainian men arrived late at night in Mylor Bridge, situated some five miles north of Falmouth. Their journey had taken them from a UN Displaced Persons Camp in Judenburg, Germany, disembarking in Hull, a stop-off for a number of weeks at Malvern in Worcestershire before moving on by train to Truro and then finally on to a military camp at Mylor.
Five years earlier, these men had been uprooted from their homeland, aged 18-20, and transported in cattle-trucks to work as forced slave labourers in Nazi Germany and Austria.
One of those men, Mykola Andrusiw, recorded life at the Mylor camp. He recalled how during the group’s first week there, a committee was elected to “develop our cultural and national life and to show our history, traditions and culture” to the local British community.
Before long, a 17-strong choir, a dance ensemble and a quartet had been formed and together with a soloist, musicians and a comedian, the committee set about in their spare time after daily work to prepare for and organise a host of successful performances in the local area (at which they simultaneously showed off artistic Ukrainian carvings, embroidery and ceramics that they also had the skills-sets to create!).
Situated opposite the 10-barrack camp site were a number of large military coverings that had previously been used as warehouses. These were being considered for demolition until the committee intervened, requested and received permission to convert one of the constructions into a chapel. As work on the project commenced, someone then proposed the placement of a memorial with an appropriate inscription to let by-passers know “who we are and why we are here”… On 7 June 1948, both the chapel and monument were blessed by three visiting Roman Catholic priests. The inscription on the memorial reads: “This symbol of faith in God was erected by Ukrainians who, escaping from Russian Communists, found refuge in England. 7th June 1948”.
Yearning for a free Ukraine
As AUGB’s CEO noted in his address during yesterday’s commemorative event, the men who placed the memorial went on to become members and helped to develop the Association of Ukrainians. “They acquired community centres and churches to profess their Christian faith and promote their historical and spiritual cultural identity – always yearning to one day see a free and independent Ukraine”.
Heritage Minister Nigel Huddleston underlined that this was “a memorial to providing refuge to those in need” and that it “symbolises the very close relationship between the UK and Ukraine and shows that we stand shoulder to shoulder with our Ukrainian friends in time of need”.
Bishop Mounstephen especially welcomed all those who had recently arrived from Ukraine saying that “this cross today still stands as a sign of welcome and of hospitality” and that it “challenges us to go on welcoming those in need – not just those who are nearest and like us, but also those who are different and distant from us as well”.
Ukraine’s Deputy Ambassador Taras Krykun said that the Ukrainians had “erected this monument as a sign and symbol of the path that they had travelled”. He recalled how the Soviets tried to erase the memory of Ukrainians and Ukraine’s fight for freedom.
“During Soviet times, Ukraine suffered the horrors of the Gulag, deportations, mass executions, Holodomor, terror for everything and anything that was connected to Ukrainian Independence. Millions of Ukrainians were killed, tortured, deported and deprived of their homes. “Today, tragically, we are witnessing a surreal repetition of history: war against a peaceful country, terror against innocent people. Russia continues to question the very existence of the Ukrainian nation.”
Mr Krykun ended his speech by thanking the people of the United Kingdom for their unwavering support and expressed the hope that together “we will see our common goal of victory, prosperity and peace.
AUGB’s CEO thanked everyone who had contributed in granting the memorial protected status: “I know that those who placed the memorial would be very proud to see today’s event here. They would undoubtedly stand with tears in their eyes: Tears of joy that their memorial has received such recognition and tears of sadness at the unfolding circumstances in Ukraine”.
The commemoration ended with Minister Huddleston and Deputy Ambassador Krykun jointly laying wreaths at the foot of the memorial on behalf of the UK and Ukraine.
Participants then transferred to Tremayne Hall where the Women’s Institute very kindly hosted tea and cakes which proved to be an excellent setting for everyone to continue discussions about events of 75 years ago and the present.
It is only fitting to end this piece by repeating the call that rings out today in all corners of Ukraine: Glory to Ukraine, Glory to the Heroes [who are laying down their lives for Ukraine’s Freedom and Independence]!
