KYIV:  At around 5.20 local time on Saturday evening, following his election during a specially convened Council which took place in the 1,000 year-old sobor of Saint Sophia, Metropolitan of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyi and Bila Tserkva, Epiphanius (Dumenko), was announced to a waiting crowd of over 35,000 people as head of the newly established independent Unified Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

 

The Church has already been granted autocephaly by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, much to the disapproval and opposition of the Russian Orthodox Church.
