HOLODOMOR COMMEMORATION IN COVENTRY

25.11.18

The main regional commemoration of the Holodomor in the Midlands took place in Coventry Cathedral yesterday. Distinguished guests included the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress of Coventry and their consorts.

Precentor of Coventry Cathedral Rev. Canon David Stone opened the commemoration with a Litany of Reconciliation which was followed by an address of AUGB Coventry Branch Chair, Dr Marian Kosmirak and then a Procession of Five Ears of Wheat (Ukrainian Saturday School, Coventry).

The events of 1932-33 were captured in narrative interspersed with extracts from testimonies of survivors.

The Panakhyda (Requiem) Service was concelebrated by Rev. Frs. Bohdan Matwijczuk (Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church) and Aleksandr Lisovskyj (Ukrainian Catholic Church) to the moving singing of the London Cathedral Choir of the Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord, choirmaster Ivan Bilaniuk.

Dr Kosmirak read out the address of the representative of Ukraine, First Councillor Oleh Pavlyshyn. Addresses were also given by Simon Bell and Fedir Kurlak (AUGB).

The commemoration ended with the singing of the “Prayer for Ukraine”.

Participants then attended an exhibition, “Glimpses of the Holodomor”, held at the AUGB Coventry Branch premises.
