The number of dead

Calculations made on the basis of the censuses of 1926 and 1939, and the suppressed census of 1937 give estimates from 4 – 10 million dead in Ukraine. Ten million was the figure Stalin gave to Churchill. Robert Conquest estimates 11.5 million dead, with famine deaths at about 7 million – 5 million in Ukraine, 1 million in the Kuban and North Caucasus, 1 million in the Don and lower Volga. Three million died during dekulakisation and about 1 million  Kazakhs died when banned from their nomadic life style. To this 11 million some 3 million people in labour camps brings the estimate of anti-peasant and anti-Ukrainian victims to approximately 14 million.

Whatever the exact number, the Holodomor was Stalin’s largest and most horrific crime – a cold-blooded and deliberate attempt to liquidate a nation.
