IS GERMANY PREPARING TO BOYCOTT EURO-2012?

30.04.12

According to a report in today’s Guardian, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is planning to boycott next month's Euro 2012 football tournament in Ukraine unless imprisoned opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko is released.  Citing Der Spiegel magazine, it says that Merkel is considering staying away from Euro 2012 games that will be staged in Ukraine and that she is urging her ministers to do the same.

This news follows on from reports last week that Germany's president Joachim Gauck will not attend next month's meeting of European presidents, hosted by Ukraine's President Viktor Yanukovych, as a mark of protest against Tymoshenko's incarceration.

Meanwhile under the headline “Calls for Euro 2012 boycott increase in Germany”, the country’s DeWelt newspaper considers the views of several politicians as to whether or not the football championships should go ahead in Ukraine.  It cites Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen as telling the Monday edition of the mass-market Bild newspaper that the "dictatorship" in Ukraine cannot be allowed to use the Euro Championships to improve its image.
