AUGB JOINS WORLD CONGRESS OF UKRAINIANS CALL FOR AID TO FLOOD VICTIMS

30.07.08

The AUGB has joined the World Congress of Ukrainians in calling for aid to areas of western Ukraine that have been affected by severe flooding.  Five days of heavy rain have caused the Prut and Dniestr rivers to overflow.

According to some reports the floods have so far caused up to 22 deaths and have destroyed homes, farmland and roads.  More than 40,000 homes have been flooded and over 20,000 residents have been evactuated from the worst-hit areas.

One senior government official has described the flooding as the worst in over a century.  President Viktor Yushchenko has declared the region a national disaster area.

Victims of the flooding are in desperate need of basic aid.  Special funds to provide some relief to victims have been set up in Canada, America and here in the UK.  If you live in the UK and are able to help, please send your contribution to the AUGB, 49 Linden Gardens, London W2 4HG.  Cheques should be made payable to the "AUGB" and marked "Flood Fund" on the reverse.  Many thanks for your support!!!
