On 19 August 1947, in the main hall of the AUGB’s newly acquired property (March 1947) at 49 Linden Gardens, W2, the then Bishop Mstyslav Skrypnyk celebrated the first Divine Liturgy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC) in Great Britain.  The service marked the formal formation of the UAOC in this country.

70 years on, last Saturday, 19 August, we were delighted to welcome Church dignatories and laity to a special commemorative Moleben service led by the Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the USA, Metropolitan Antoniy, and concelebrated with the Chair of the Eparchy Consistory of the UAOC in GB, Archbishop Daniel, and priests of the UAOC and the Ukrainian Catholic Church in GB.

Metropolitan Antoniy spoke warmly about the immense significance of Bishop, later Patriarch Skrypnyk, and his dedicated service to the Church and his faithful. Rev. Bohdan Matwijczuk delivered a brief history of the UAOC in GB.

The celebratory occasion was rounded off with a reception held in the AUGB’s Gallery. Metropolitan Antoniy and Archbishop Daniel also visited the Shevchenko Library and Archive where they were given a guided tour by the Library’s Curator, Dr Ludmila Pekarska.
